GTX 260 High temps

I've got MSI GTX 260 192sp and it's burning like hell when i'm playing. Idle temp is 55 degrees, but when i'm playing for example Supreme Commander 2 Gpu temp reaches 105 degrees. I've got this problem for 1.5 year since i bought it. I've got CM690 with 4 fans, i tried to clean whole Gpu, i replaced Thermal compund on AS5 but have no result.

Am not a pro or anything but i had the same problem with my gtx 260 192. What u have to try is wipe this driver completely and try install the 185 (cnt rmmbr the exact no lol)

Crank that fan speed up with Rivatuner. Never any overheating when I did that.

I use the 185.85 driver (mine is the '216' cores model).

If you took the shroud and heatsink off and replaced the thermal paste I hope you put brand new thermal tape back on as well. When you re-use the stock thermal tape after you opened it up it loses the grip and heat transfer it had before you opened it up. That is why it is important to replace it with new thermal tape if you do this.

I would also suggest in the future using a thermal paste with no cure time (OCZ Freeze, AC MX-2 for example) instead of AS 5 which has a 200 hour cure time.

Setting up some fan profiles in Rivatuner will help as well.

also could be driver issues make sure to clean up very well. i use dh-drivercleaner . or at last format ur pc. then install diferent driver . like 182.08 or 182.06 this two have worked very well for me.

Is your fan working properly? Does it increase in RPM when you're playing games?

You can put all the TIM on the GPU, but if your fan isn't working right, the temps will still skyrocket.

I'm playing with 100% fan, it does work, because of terrible noise

OK, what temps do you get with your fan at 100%?

And whats your ambient temperature? If your ambient temp is high, and your case isn't well ventilated, then your temps are going to be high..

Ambient temp is over 28c.
With 100% fan, Idle is 52c and load is over 99c (while playing Sands of time on lowest configuration).
I used small amount of MX-2.

Are you sure that you tightened the screws for the heatsink properly? I have the 55nm 216sp model (smaller process should run cooler, but not much cooler) and I have idle around 38'c with the fan at a silent auto and 24'c ambients. GPUGrid pushes the card to about 70'c with the fan at a quiet 52%. Gaming never passes 60'c, again with the fan at a silent auto

This thermal picture was taken inside a Sonata (not so good for temps) and with a 260 65nm 192SP and it does 87° under load.

Sounds like a bad contact between cooling solution and GPU.
Maybe try to low voltage on GPU too or with a large amount of compound but that's not a viable solution.

If you are absolutely sure the HSF is mounted properly and not clogged with dust, I'd say RMA time. You will likely get a better card as replacement from RMA as well

The 65nm series had a random designflaw where the heatspreader was not correctly installed thus making hardly any contact with the chip resulting in really high temps. Since you ruled out any other possibilities I`m certain that this is also the case with your card. As your current cooler wont work without the heatspreader at all and the removal itself will most likely kill the card I definetely advise to RMA.

I don't think Newegg would RMA your card in any case, unless you bought it within 30 days..

Since your card is MSI, perhaps they could help you. They have offices in the East, which are closer to Georgia than the U.S, so sending your card to them for an RMA shouldn't take as long.

recently one of our fellow crunchers had some weird heating problem with his gtx260 also. power draw was very inconsistent measured with kil-a-watt, so it might be some bad voltage regulators on the card sometimes causing too much voltage fed to the card. this would mean it'll generate a lot of excess heat.
