    Angry Splinter Cell Conviction PC requirements emerge, so does the drm

    Hi all, my first post here...

    Well this is something i was really looking forward to buy... as i have the last one. I tried and loved it so much that i had to go out and buy it. With the next one, i just wouldn't possibly be able to convince myself to do so. Yes, it is the stay always online DRM which is pissing me off, an not to discount many other customers who would be considering purchase of this game.

    What do you say...

    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/spl...tion,9923.html

    Those wanting to play Splinter Cell: Conviction on their PCs have to be mindful of two things: 1) the system requirements; and 2) Ubisoft's new internet
    DRM.

    Thanks to a listing posted on VG247, we now have the full details on what it takes to run the next chapter of Sam Fisher's adventures.

    Recommended specs:

    * Supported OS: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
    * Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Core2 Duo or 2.4 GHz AMD Athlon X2 64
    * RAM: 1.5 GB Windows XP / 2 GB Windows Vista, Windows 7
    * Video Card: 256 MB DirectX 9.0c–compliant video card (512 MB recommended) (see supported list*)
    * Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c–compliant sound card
    * DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c
    * DVD-ROM: DVD-ROM drive
    * Hard Drive Space: 10 GB
    * Peripherals Supported: Mouse, keyboard, headset, 12-button gamepads with analog sticks
    * Internet Connection: Broadband Internet connection

    *Supported Video Cards at Time of Release:

    * NVIDIA GeForce 7800 / 7900 / 8 / 9 / GTX series
    * ATI RADEON X1800 / X1900 / HD 2000 / HD 3000 / HD 4000 / HD 5000 series
    * Laptop versions of these cards may work but are NOT supported. These chipsets are the only ones that will run this game.

    Note: A permanent high speed internet connection and creation of a Ubisoft account are required to play this video game at all times and to unlock exclusive content. Such content may only be unlocked one single time with a unique key. You must be at least 13 to create a Ubisoft account.
    Sadly, even though a demo is hitting Xbox 360 gamers today, PC gamers won't be treated to any try-before-you-buy action.

    I'm pretty sure I read somewhere the DRM was cracked a few weeks ago... I could be wrong.

    Anyway... amazing game. Played all the previous ones and it never stops being fun Personally... I'd love to see this game extend a little longer that its predecessors.

    Suprised? Its a Ubisoft game. They said all future titles (until they realize this sucks) will use this DRM.

    I'm not surprised and wont be buying any Ubisoft games until they stop using that ridiculous, draconian DRM if they ever stop using it at all. I certainly wont be the only one that's for sure.

    Why wouldn't they use it? I don't think the Silent Hunter 5 DRM has been cracked yet. This DRM is actually pretty effective as far as DRM goes.

    add me to the list.

    i do not and never will support drm like that. thank god ubisoft doesn't sell any of the game franchises i like. the last game from ubisoft i played was far cry 2 - and this only lasted for 3 hours, after that it was just the same repetitive crap over and over again...

    For those of us who play over wireless which can cut out every now and then, this is a deal killer IMO. I experienced it will the new C&C title and I am not about to go through that again.

    Not only that but the lack of a demo is really a slap in the face for PC gamers. Expect the same with the new Deus Ex game as well.

    I just don't understand how these companies think this will help PC gaming. I'm all for DRM but when draconian measures are put in place, it defeats the purpose.

    Oh look who's here, hey SKY

    How weird is it we're replying to different posts on different sites at the same time?

    How would the DRM affect your gameplay over wireless DC'S?

    its a toss up for them between forcing pirates to buy or pissing off the honest buyer w/o a connections.(and im betting some of the above poster's are not the latter) Yet another reason developers cant win and want to avoidthe pc industry. From what I understand there is still no working crack for assassin's creed II because of this. Good on them I say. I'd rather have this then no pc titles at all. f-u pirates for killing my industry

    i don't think pirates complain about smth like that, but legit customers will.

    i have no idea whether the drm of assassins creed 2 or silent hunter 5 etc is cracked yet or not, but i do know that until now everything has been cracked sooner or later. so if you're a pirate just lean back and wait another few weeks and voila...
    but customers who buy the game will still be dependent on the drm...

    i just feel weird to download cracks for the games i've bought. that's exactly what i started to do: crack my legally bought games, which just makes me mad

    I was also looking forward to the Settlers7 as they finally decided to go back to the old roots. But as its been stated all new Ubisoft games (Conviction, Settlers7, Future Solider etc) will come with this DRM. I dont want limits i want choices, until they back off my money stays with me.

    Also worth mentioning that EA also has an always-on DRM for its games. I think C&C4 might the first game to be limited by it.

    P.S. Still boycotting MW2. Have some Jarate in your face Ubisoft/EA/Activision.

    not buying any game with this drm system, would be fun if every piece of software had to stay connected to the Internet to work..

    It isn't the pirates killing the industry, it is the industry killing the industry. They are actively selecting the console industry because it is easier. The reason for the recent surge in PC specific games is due primarily to the gaping void that has slowly formed. The hardcore PC gaming industry is dying while the casual PC/console gaming industry is booming. AAA titles are risky especially on the PC where the majority of your market uses integrated graphics. It is easier to chuck a few bucks to a dev team in India/China/* and crank out Facebook games and see a massive return on your investment versus building a highly talented team(could be from India/China/etc) and grinding out an AAA title over 24 months of development. There however is the Inifinite Monkey theorem that might yield an AAA title once in a blue moon

    *-$10/hr programmers abound online. With a few hours you can outsource an entire project and relegate yourself to project manager

    Fair enough but put yourself in the shoes of the developer, they're forced to do this due to pirating as they way i look at it it's for the our, the honest PC gamer, benefit in the end. They find a way to keep making money and they'll continue or start again making exclusive PC titles.(i know thats not what UBI games are, but Far Cry was) Basically its the pirates ruining it for the rest of us. You cant put the blame on the developers for taking these measures imho

    A good point, but why now when before it was the same situation with consoles and the PC market yet we saw many more AAA PC exclusives then we do today. What's changed?

    Everyone didn't just jump ship to consoles. Look at the PS3.. nobody knew how to code for Cell and it had a tiny launch library. Now the PS3 library is huge, console prices have fallen, and the developers have educated themselves. However, I'd say the death knell of the PC industry was the damn Xbox. If Microsoft had chosen to dump those billions into PC gaming we'd have a Renaissance on our hands. Instead near every college male in the US owns or has access to a Xbox 360 and only a few of them game on PCs. Walking around the fraternities on campus on a random weekend illustrates my point.. maybe 1-2 PC gamers for every 2-3 dozen Xbox 360 or PS3 gamers. The Wii then has casual gaming on lock down which is a HUGE market. That leaves the PC with.. flash games and a stagnant/shrinking AAA market.

    Needing constant internet connection for a single player game, ruins it if you want to play it on a laptop on a train/plane. Also because drm like that I voted with my wallet and will not buy assigns creed 2.

    This drm is ending up saving me money

    Screw this. I always loved the splinter cell series, but I'm not going to buy this game. I'm using a wireless connection, and it sucks getting booted from a single player offline game, because my internet connection drops once in a while. Would piss me off having to replay the same thing, just because you didn't save yet, and you got disconnected...

    Nope it wasn't. You could play the game but you couldn't take the missions. Maybe it's cracked now, I don't know, but it was definitely not cracked within 24 hrs.
