Taking a look at the PCB shot, I'm going to say this... "not a chance". The GPU is simply too large and too complex to compete by price. The die itself is twice the size of RV880 and will likely have all the problems associated with larger dies. Maybe it'll launch to fight the HD5000's, but AMD's first move will be to drop prices significantly... perhaps like I'm guessing below.

funny because quite a lot of people did the opposite and said Fermi and went for the 5850 or 5870

For now, the only company with "64-bit OS only" boards will be AMD with the afore mentioned Dual-Cypress "5990" parts that feature 4GB of GDDR5 memory.
huh i dont think thats correct, the 5990 is basically a 5970 that means the memory config is 2*2GB and wold be seen by 32bit OS just fine?

    I could be wrong tough!!

graphics memory is included in the total memory, thus you'd need a 64bit OS to run a 4GB card

What does video memory have to do with the OS?

Do you have to run a 64-bit OS in order to have 4GB video memory? I don't think so, could be wrong though. Besides that, each GPU is fed 2GB not 4.

Yea exactly, but I don't think you'll see quite that big price cut initially but perhaps 339~$369 for HD5870 if we talk retail prices compared to today's typical 399 - $429 on newegg and maybe HD5850 around $249~269 I'd say.

I am going to guess $500 for the GTX470 and $625 for the GTX480 all in US prices. I am thinking they will sell it at this because there will be features they will advertise really hard to justify the extra cost.

What are you talking about? It does not matter if the memory belongs to 1, 2 or 50 GPU cores. OS adresses WHOLE memory in the computer. That means RAM, VRAM, CPU L1, L2 and L3 cache, HDD cache etc. OS x86-32=2^32=4 GB. You won't be able even to boot the system up since RAM is last in the line to be adressed.

Np...it's obvious when you see at available memory:
    512 MB VGA...some 3,5 GB
    1 GB VGA...some 3 GB

I usually advised x86-64 OS even with 512MB card and definitelly with 1GB card. With 2GB it will hurt and what's really funny, you won't boot with 4GB card or 2 2GB cards

Anybody tried? I am actually interested in this now

not only that but the 5870 will go eol as soon as they launch the 5890.
which will push prices of the 5870 down for sure.

now two companys are going to fight it out with dx11 cards prices will be tighter

Yea if you do a direct conversion but did you also compare the other card's prices listed in the same thread? Seems like in Malaysia it's around 22% expensier than in US.

With 22% price difference taken into account that would translate to a more reasonable $370 and $477.

    How about 699$ for 480 and 499$ for 470 ?

Old stock, no price tweaks like US.

For early stock/new products Malaysia is one of the best places- prices after gouging are equal/slightly below MSRP.

    The 5870 doesn't cost $500...

And whatever it costs now, expect it to drop some when this launches.

GTX 295 works in sli with 32bit os and so does gtx 285 triple sli. Also last time i checked asus mars Dual GeForce GTX 285 4096 MB worked ok with windows 32bit.

5990 with 2*2gb is no different, each gpu will hold 2gb's not 4gb.
