    Sapphire 5970 gpu(s) question

    Hello all!

I was just wondering if it was possible somehow to turn off one gpu when needed? Asking because some games do not support dual gpus and work better with just one.

    Thank you in advance!

There is no CF option in CCC with one card. Only had it before when I used two 4850 cards.

I've put Ai on "disable" long time ago since enabling it makes my screen flash and glitter. Don't know how it could help in disabling one GPU.

I discovered a way to do this by accident. I was playing around with the bios for my 5970 and accidentally flashed both cores with a master bios, instead of master and slave. When I got to windows, CCC recognized each core separately and I was able to set CF from the CCC.

Try that at your own risk of course. I didn't do any testing to see if each core was in fact acting separately or not. I just noticed that I could set CF in CCC.

Oh my... if the 5970s driver implementation is the same as the 3870/4870x2, you've been using 1 gpu this whole time as with these cards, disabling Catalyst AI disables crossfire. As for why you are getting flickering with AI on...

all you have to do is disable crossfirex and it shuts down one gpu you can tell because when you go into the overive tab theres no drop down menu for the second gpu......when it anabled theres a tab that drops down showing the second one. This is how it works with my 4850x2 single card.

Drop down menu is right beside the lock/unlock for ati overdrive

You can simple disable the second adapter in the Windows device manager, then restart the machine.

OK, I didn't know that disabling Catalyst AI = disabling one GPU. I've done it since enabling both GPUs makes my screen flicker in most games like crazy. Now I'm back to "crossfire" and trying to find a solution to the old problem (flickering).
I've read somewhere that "connecting another display to the DVI port fixes the problem", but lack another cable to try this out.

Did you try to turn on Vsync? Usually fixes a lot of problems with dual GPU setups (micro stuttering, screen tearing). Locks your FPS to monitor refresh rate though.

edit: and yeah I also remember that Catalyst A.I. on enabled is required for CrossfireX to work.

I prefer my fps being above refresh rate of my monitor, so I avoid enabling Vsync.
