Post Joining GPUGrid the easy way

(Title stolen from Angmaar's - AKA hotwaxisbad WCG thread.)

First of all, welcome to the team and thank you for any and all contributions: past, present and future. This guide is to help people new to Boinc and/or GPUGrid. Although we here at Xtreme Systems would love to have you on our team, the only thing we ask is that you crunch - doesn't matter for who. Again, thanks for joining, and

If anything doesn't make sense, feel free to post or PM me. I'm more than happy to help!

There is a video Walk though here for an overview. Below will go slowly step by step.

First, make sure you have a compatible GPU
Note: this currently only works for Nvidia GPUs. They are working on expanding this, but as of yet they have not released an ATI/AMD beta.

    Full list here

    Second, Update your drivers here

Make sure to select the correct series, product and OS (remember 32/64 bit!)

This is what mine looks like on a GTX 260M
Version must be >195.xx (we currently recommend 196.xx)

Note: WCG BOINC client does not suport GPGPU as of currently so if you installed that first a reinstall will be necessary. If you uninstall BOINC and reinstall the new one you should NOT lose your current WUs.

    Next, download the BOINC client
    for Windows 64-bit/32-bit
    for Linux 64-bit

By clicking one of the above links, this pop-up will appear. Save the File.

    Click Next

Accept the terms and agreement and then click next

Click Advanced to allow you to change settings

Make sure the files go where you want them
(Only necessary to change if running off of a SSD)
Uncheck the first two boxes (red arrows)
Check the third box (green arrow)
    And click next

    Click install

Check to launch BOINC (green arrow) and Finish

Click to add a new project

Make sure you're choosing to attach to project and hit next

Either scroll down and select GPUGrid or type www.GPUGrid.net in the space
    Click next

As you are probably a new user, click new user and Fill in your details.
If you are not a new user, the next screen will ask for Email and Password
This allows you to put multiple computers on a single user name.

    Finish

This name will be how we identify you, so pick a name you want on your pie!

To Join XS, Type XtremeSystems in the blank and check the 'active teams' box
    Click search

    Click the XtremeSystems Name

    Click Join this team

Some tips to maximize results (and Points):

    Go to Advanced View

In the toolbar select Advance and scroll down to Preferences (second from top)

Check Use while on batteries (Note: this DRASTICALLY reduces Battery life with GPUGrid)
Check Use computer while in use
Check Use GPU while computer is in use
Set While processor use is less than 0% (no restriction)
Make sure that Processor and CPU Time are at 100%
The amount of difference these make depends on your computer and use habits, but it can only boost results.

    Thanks for joining and

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask below.

Also, If your CPU is idle, please consider WCG. The best guide I've ever seen is here.

Thanks to MikeB12, PoppaGeek, 123bob for help on this!
Thanks to Angmaar (AKA hotwaxisbad) for his WCG guide!

If you're having trouble with errors, try updating your drivers: (Thanks slaveondope)
    http://developer.nvidia.com/object/c...oolkit_rc.html

Note to volunteers running 8 and 9 series cards: G92 chips may not run KASHIF_HIVPR properly. If you are getting occasional errors but some units complete correctly, this is likely the issue.

Suggestion Next get boinc from boinc site where you can choose the right one for your OS

(I just joined from wcg and ran 32bit for weeks)

Need pic of all the choices so that no-one feels left out

Good to note that there is a performance advantage with 64 bit... Does that carry over to GPUGrid?

And won't all the BOINC setups be the same after the initial click of the above links?

I'll add alot of pics too... just lemme know!

Hotwaxisbad did something similar for WCG HERE.

It's pretty good. So good I ripped it off (with his permission of course) to use on the WCG team I started on TechReaction's forum.

Something like this would be a good example.

Good work. Honestly, I hadn't thought about putting up something like that here, since I joined as an add-on to my WCG effort some time ago. I was already totally up on BOINC when I joined.......Good idea!

Is this in the other thread you made? They should sticky the other one and have a link inside there to this.

Hey guys, I'm a GPUGRID newbie and I thought I had it up and running on my 8800GT, but I'm getting a message from the server saying "Your computer has no NVIDIA GPU". I have the latest drivers (just installed them) and my GPU is clearly listed in green on their supported GPU list. Any ideas?

    Sorry - I didn't give many details.

    Windows XP 32-bit
I also downloaded the BOINC manager originally for WCG and added GPUGRID as a project - is that an acceptable way to do things?

Should be ok there. In the messages tab on Boinc Manager does it list the GPU? Does Boinc see it? Also what version is it?

EDIT: Ok i think I see the problem. WCG is still sending out an old version. Uninstall it and download from here.

No, get the lastest BOINC version that Poppa gave you. When you install it, DO NOT check the "Protected Application Execution" button, that's the thing that makes it go "no Nvidia GPU."

Good Luck and thanks for helping

One more question: can I keep the work done on my current WCG tasks when I uninstall/reinstall BOINC or will they be gone? Not a huge deal...I just figure if I can save a 15 or 20 CPU-hours of time or so I would try.

When you uninstall and reinstall they'll still be there.

    Awesome, thanks.

Went home at lunch and got it up and running! One thing I notice is that it looks like it may be being backed out by my WCG jobs - apparently it needs some CPU time as well. Any recommendations as to how to set up my options to get the most crunching done on both WCG and GPUGRID?

It does take some cpu time, but it doesn't significantly impact wcg... If you just leave everything how it installed itself it should be fine (unless there is already something odd going on?)

If the CPU i at 100% load and the GPUGrid WU is crunching I think you're good.

Once again I didn't really provide any details and expected you guys to be psychic .

I actually set the CPU usage for BOINC to 100% since right now I'm not doing anything else on my PC and I figure that will enable me to contribute the most. So rather than the default 60-70%, it's set to 100% and all 4 cores are enabled. Would that back out the GPU task or will it take priority over the WCG stuff and grab 0.2 CPUs (or whatever it asked for) to ensure my GPU has enough work to do?

I guess what I'm trying to avoid is a GPU that's idle most of the time due to my silly settings causing there to be no free CPU time.

Thanks again for all the help - I appreciate it.

The GPU task will steal the CPU for the time it needs... Should be fine unless there's something you notice out of the norm.

    BTW

Also, I believe the OP is done... If you see anything to fix/add please let me know!

That's good then, I think it should be running properly. I'll check the progress when I get home and hopefully I can happily contribute for the team without needing to bug you guys anymore .

Thanks for the warm and helpful welcome!
