You know you're on the right boat when you actually GET results, unlink SETI@home

By aggregating the unused cycle time of 1.5 million personal computers donated by volunteers in over 80 countries, World Community Grid is now the world’s largest public humanitarian grid, equivalent in power to a Top 15 supercomputer

I'm guessing the delay is getting the rig running without causing blackouts along the entire east coast?

I heard in the news there are blackouts in New England. They say it's because of the storm, but everybody here know the real reason ...

I can't believe that it's only the power of a top 15 super computer.

Maybe they mean the "top 15" versus WCG?

Then again, you're looking at tens of thousands of quad-cores to compete with a single supercomputer. Jaguar, the current #1, has 224,000 Operton cores.

And here the only reason I went from FX-55 @ 3.45GHz to 965 was for WCG 24/7.

Many of those machines are single cores, not dual or quads let alone hexa-cores.

Even though, 224,000 cores vs 1,500,000 PCs? I'd think very high in the top ten, if not top five?

As I said, that was a single supercomputer (#2 spot) using off-the-shelf parts. Considering that the typical computer on WCG would probably be a 3GHz Pentium 4-HT or similar, WCG on a whole would probably match a single supercomputer. What's massive for IBM is that EVERY project gets massive runtime; where a supercomputer can be borrowed for a few days at most, WCG is providing data processing for months at a time and is much more flexible for the devs. But yeah; assume that best case there are 750,000 PC's up and the average PC is half as fast as whatever AMD K10 core they're running, and you should still have a faster super-computer. But the fact that these units are so modular and all, theoretical FLOPS is probably a whole lot more than actual FLOPS.

Basically the discussion here boils down to us needing to add more current gen hardware to the grid so that we can push WCG up into the top 5 for supercomputers.

    Anyone disagree?

Well yesterday WCG as a whole managed 299 years 182 days 23 hours 30 minutes and 20 seconds of run time. That equates to the equivalent of 109,318 cores running 24hrs a day. There aren't, of course, but that's what it averages out to. So what you REALLY have is WCG hitting the top 15 with 109,318 cores (equivalent). If that number seems way to low, consider that many of the people registered have left/retired etc for whatever reason. The 1.5mil is the TOTAL number of registrations, not active members.
