i7 = future and features / vs. / i5 = warranty - it depends what you value more. Just don't get the new Clarkdale because the dual die chip is a terrible design.

I'm in the same boat as the OP although my upgrade to P55/X58 will be nearer the summer. I'm extremely surprised to hear that the i5 750 is on par with and sometimes even outperforms the i7 920.

If I could get X58 or P55 components for the same price, I'd go for X58 without a second thought. Isn't the upgrade path better? And doesn't QPI have some value worth mentioning?

if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is... all things being equal the i7 920 will pummel any 1156.

Respectfully disagree the 860 and 920 are give or take.

I think the 920 will indeed pummel any 1156 but only in certain applications. I'm an FSX guy and I've read that QPI bandwidth sets the X58 a cut above the rest in that particular game.

i7-920 is better than any i5. period. But if the OP wants, he can get a Pentium IV and be happy with it. Hes money, hes decision.

i5 750 all the way!!!! When everything would be at new price, its 75% of the cost, 70% of the power consumption and 98% of the performance an i7 920 can give you. IMHO i7 920 is galaticly overrated and only defended by the people that bought them because they just don't want to see the truth that it is and continue will be a waste of money running it. Great for your e-penis, great for benching but in the real world with normal tasks and gaming just isn't worth the cost of buying and running it.

This is true of Lynnfield also - evident even in this thread, some people paint a very rosy picture of the 750 and are quite dismissive of the 920, and it's just a ruse for the sake of e-peen compensation: they have second-best and deep down inside they don't like it. Lynnfield is definitely the more cost-effective option but not everybody is on a tight budget and many people (like me) want nothing other than the best raw performance, money aside. I couldn't care less about e-peen; I want a PC that runs FSX without crashing every time I load the bleeding game lol.

Check the rig from my sig(I'm running it like that 24/7). To all the i5 owners with water and air cooling: choose an application or a benchmark and try to catch the performance of my OC-ed i7-920 D0.

This is my first i7-920 C0:

Check the date on the sticker. Do you still think that I made a mistake buying it?

Right, and upgrading from a Q6600 to an i5-750 is worth the cost and will make so big difference for normal tasks and gaming...

No NO NO... the people who bought 920s / 1156 bought them because they think their choice is best. It's not "defending because they bought one" - they bought one because that's how they see it.

It's not just about the CPU, boards have different features depending on chipset.

I will agree that X58 uses way more energy. I don't care. My i3 used about 10 watts idle, my 920 uses about 100 watts idle (rough software gauge). I plan on having this PC in 6 years, so in 6 years I can say it was the best available, not "well... this was the cheaper version of Intel's top-of-the-line, but they are just as fast." :P haha that just sounds ridiculous and no one will believe you.
