    Can't Overvolt 5870 Over 1.125v With RBE

I'm stumped here. I flashed a friend's 5870 to 1.3v by setting it in the x18 register and it worked fine. I try changing my x18 register to my desired voltage (1.275v) and after flashing and going into Windows I get 1.125v under 3D load. I tried 1.3v with RBE but the same thing happened. I'm trying to edit the Asus unlocked BIOS (untouched by RBE).

However, I can use Afterburner to set the voltage I want. In fact, testing different voltages with Afterburner is how I came up with 1.275v, since I found out my card can do 1050/1300 stable with 1.275v. That said, I would much rather flash the desired voltage with RBE than having to run Afterburner every time.

    Any ideas?

I'd check over at techpowerup.com forums. I've only modified my own existing BIOS with the overclock limits it already has in place (5970), it sounds like you are running into a signature issue. I'm just a novice, I'm sure they should be able to help.

Sometimes it is register 17 instead of 18.

Others have simply set all registers to their desired setting (just to test) with success.

Other than that it could be the bios you are working with simply does not have support for 1.3v in which case it would default to the nearest voltage it does support.

Which card model / bios version was it that worked on your friends card?

    Thanks for the replies guys.

The Asus BIOS I'm using on both our cards is this one: http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/5...24.090915.html

Both our cards are the same XFX model.

I'll also try posting my issue in the TPU forum (don't know why I didn't think of it sooner, lol).

I'll also try modifying other registers when I get home, but I don't think that will work because no register has the value 1.125v in it.

Afterburner has its own defaults for voltage, are you sure it's not the issue? Check it with GPU-Z without touching AB.
Try modding again using the latest version of RBE. Make sure not to touch anything else that's not necessary.
    Remember driver reinstalling part.

Na, it's not AB. I even uninstalled it and tried RBE again and had the same issue.

About the driver, though. You mean re-install the driver after I flash the card?

    It's recommended, yes.

Ok, I'll also try it when I get home. Although, I'm willing to bet re-installing drivers won't make a difference.

    Yeah, same here.
It's usually totally necessary only if you're flashing a completely different BIOS.

Well nothing worked. Not changing other registries or re-installing drivers.

I made a thread at TPU and no one has replied yet either.

    ... still stumped.

I have the exact same problem!
Although I can change clock speeds just fine voltages do not change. When gaming I have the same voltage as you (1.125) yet its not in ANY register, GPU or VTT.

YGr7JiOETk go to C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner and open MSIAfterburner.cfg with notepad and set UnlockVoltageControl = 1 and also UnlockVoltageMonitoring now its possible

That's not the problem I was talking about. I can easily change voltages with Afterburner or Smartdoctor. It's changes in the BIOS that won't stick.

No worries. I wasn't talking to you, either. I was replying to what YGr7JiOETk said.

    THIS!!!

If you have the XFX Model with the fan in the middle it doesn't support Voltage tuning. Return it and get a Reference model.

man, this version is such a pile of . It has so many problems not to mention benchmark results do not change when i vs overclocked vs stock speeds. it's true and i can prove it as well. should make this as my excuse to RMA because there is a 15% restocking fee otherwise.
