How To: Stop beta W7 copies from "deactivating"

DISCLAIMER: In light of recent hystericalism and apparent confusion about what this method actually is and does I'm rewriting this first post. This method is for BETA copies of Win 7. It uses legal means by way of administrative control to allow users / small / medium businesses to safely backup their data prior to moving to a retail copy of Win 7. If a mod feels this borders too close to a "crack" or "warez" then feel free to delete this thread.

    What is this method?

As described in the disclaimer this is NOT a "crack" or "warez", it is a means for users and small / medium businesses running a beta version of Win 7 to safely backup their data without fear of losing anything due to W7 deactivating and shutting down every 2 hours.

    What does this method do?

This method uses Administrative Privilages (read: NOT a crack or warez) to delete a few files, thus preventing beta copies of W7 from shutting down allowing users to safely backup their data without fear of data loss.

    How does this method work?

This method incorporates the use of a small (legitimate) registry entry commonly known as Grant Admin Full Control. The purpose in Grant Admin Full Control is to easily take control and access passworded files and folders a user or business may have ported from a older OS to W7. The details about GAFT can be found on mydigitallife at this LINK

So how do I use this method?

    You can use this method by following these simple steps;

    1. Download a small registry patch called Grant Admin Full Control, simply double-click it and let it add to the registry.
    2. Restart your computer and boot into safe mode (press F8 during boot)
    3. Search for and delete all files with the following names;

Note: Before you can delete the below files you will need to right-click on each of them individually and then left-click on "Grant Admin Full Control"

    SLLUA.exe
    sppsvc.exe
    SLUI.exe
    sppuinotify.dll
    SLUINotify.dll

    4. Delete any old restore points and empty your recycle bin.
    5. Thats it. Your now free to take as much time as you need to backup your data without Windows shutting down every 2 hours.

Hopefully this rewritten post now clears up and clarifies any misdemeanours. Again, if any mod feels this is too much like a crack or warez feel free to just delete the thread.

Grant Admin Full Control is a small registry entry designed for admins to take control of files Windows normally wont allow for administrative purposes such as user files password protected from previous OSes, its not a crack or warez. The rest is simple file deletion. As I put in the 2nd disclaimer tho, if a mod thinks its too close to being a crack or warez then by all means just delete the thread. Just thought I would put it up as ive had calls from various business partners asking if there is a way to disable the deactivator as they have literally hundreds of gigabytes of data to properly archive and they simply wont get it all done in 2 weeks.

ED - Link to details about Grant Admin Full Control on mydigitallife. Its a legitimate administrative resource tool.

Users have had over a year to prepare for this. Not thinking about it till now is just poor planning.

And "business" partners if there is a business using a beta OS they are D U M B .

Yeah I do not feel sorry for anyone that hasn't prepared themselves for this coming they have had tons of time and Microsoft straight up told everyone. I would understand if they told everyone today or something, but no one has any excuse for not getting it yet.

I didn't know much about it until I got some calls today and what I did know is that beta copies wernt supposed to expire until sometime in June or July, something like that. So beta copies are going down at least 3 months or so before MS said they would expire. I'm assuming thats why so many people have been caught short.

Starting on March 1, 2010 your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Your work will not be saved during the shutdown.

The Windows 7 RC will fully expire on June 1, 2010.

What sort of dip uses a beta release for their business - and can't understand the terms it comes with - begins shutting down every 2 hours in March, stops completly a couple months later.

Honestly people. This is not warez, it's not a crack, don't get all shirty at the guy for posting a solution to a problem that many folks are having issues with. It was not well publicised anywhere that Beta copies would begin restarting every two hours well before the end of the trial period, and it is impossible to back up large quantities of data if your machine keeps cutting the file transfer short because MS wants to stuff users around with restarts.

I, for one, even though I have a full, legit retail copy of Win7, would like to thank the OP for posting this.

Same here. There is also a method without downloading any registry patches:
    http://www.blogsdna.com/2159/how-to-...-windows-7.htm
What KET posted is a way of adding the above actions to a context menu so that it's easier. Everything is already in Windows, you're not using any third party app or content.

The first part of that couldn't of been made available off the bat otherwise I would of been told, I was just aware of W7 betas expiring in June. I don't get why a lot of you guys are yelling "crack" though this method is for beta W7 copies. The method uses legal means to allow small/medium businesses to safely backup their data prior to moving to a retail copy of W7.

Again, and I can't stress this enough, if a mod feels this is too close to being a crack feel free to delete the thread.

ED - I have rewritten the inital post clarifying everything. It is not my intention nor is it in my benefit to post anything resembling a crack or warez.

I did, but in two months I move to SSD and will have to restructure my hard drive completely as I'm moving from 1TB to 30GB which is going to involve a fresh installation. Just because I own a copy of Windows 7 doesn't mean I want to do an installation now and then another in two months time when I redo the lot

Except REALLY, let's be honest, for the vast majority of people employing such measures they aren't doing a quick "data backup". They want to extend their use of beta W7 indefinitely. Any other claim is just purposely dodging that fact. I mean, please clarify, what does "as much time as you need" really mean? It's going to be permanently enabled?

Please read this post before complaining. I would like to thank the OP for contributing useful info to these forums. I'm not going to have to use this trick myself, but I'm sure you helped quite a few people who do need this.

i think it just keeps the RC from shutting down every two hours, not allowing use of W7 indefinitely. someone correct me if i'm wrong.
