Need help with Nehalem Dual XEON 5520 Build

    Hello All,

    http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...umber=17220888

Above is my public build list. I'm interested in help on the mb and the ram, and maybe the psu, but in general just comments/suggestions. I've set a budget of about $2800. Ram is negotiable from 24 to 12, just not sure with the QPI I can only populate the first 3 and the second cpu will be fine.

Thanks for any help. I currently have Dual XEON 5410's which I will be moving from to this and am also interested in speed comparisons if you know of any. My z7s is one of the few here still running, so also doing this in case that one bites it.

    Yeah,
I can see the list. Question, what is this build for I assume for CAD or crunching? I ask as if you plan to over clock I'd suggest a high Wattage PSU and the EVGA dual socket MB witch is a lot more money than this MB.

Well that mb is out of stock, temporary problem. I would check supermicros site, they should post a list of recommend ram. I would get recommend ram because these server boards can be a bit picky with the ram and it's nice to know it's gonna work. Even though the EVGA board will be alot of money I would not want to buy a 5520 tylersberg now. They have zero overclockability. The evga board will let you get much more out of the xeon 5520's (I'm assuming it will.) dual 5520's at stock hardly out perform a 4.2GHz i7. The only great advantage they have is they run cool and make a better 'office' computer than an OC'd i7.

Anyways your build list looks fine. I use an Asus z8pe-12 and non ecc corsair memory for my work computer and have had no issues with it. It runs cool and quiet and I crunch with it when I'm not using it at work.
