TDK roadmap suggests 2.5TB HDDs are just around the corner

Hard drive head manufacturer TDK has recently made available a little chart that provides updated info regarding the hard drive capacity updates coming throughout this year. In the 3.5-inch zone, the next step up is a 640GB platter, which is expected to start being used as of next month and adopted by all major HDD manufacturers by November.

The move from 500GB to 640GB will enable companies to make and sell 3.5-inch drives with a 2.5TB capacity (using 4 platters) or even 3TB (5 platters).

In the 2.5-inch space, the 375GB platter is basically here as certain companies will be able to produce it as of this month. Currently the top capacity for 2.5-inch platters is 320GB to the increase will see to the arrival of 750GB 2-platter notebook HDDs. The adoption of 375GB disks will be made pretty quick, with everyone set to have them in October. This year's holiday season should come with quite a good range of 2.5TB 3.5-inch and 750GB 2.5-inch HDDs although we're not expecting very attracting prices for these.

Great since prices will again drop.

I wonder if at any point, there'll be an improvement in format times. How long does it take to format a 2TB drive? 3+ is going to take a while.
    You must [not] advance.

Thank goodness, been waiting for it to go 2TB+ with 7200rpm drives at a decent price.

Would like to see a 3TB instead, another 500GB just really isn't enough.

Should push the price down alot I think. I dont care much if it's 7200 or 5400 RPMs. Ofcourse, faster is always bether but when it comes to pure storage it dosent mather greatly.

Hmm 640GB platters should probably push avg reads to around 130~135 MB/s with 7200rpm and probably around 105~110 MB/s for 5400rpm.

It takes about the same amount of time (a few seconds) to format a 2TB drive as it does a 320GB drive. Formatting doesn't zero out a drive these days unless there's something funky with it. It just wipes the allocation table and writes a new, empty one.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

It sure does. Not until we start seeing systems w/ EFI will we be able to boot on drives larger than 2TB.

According to this Vista/server2008 and forward seems capable to
boot from a GPT enabled disk as long as the MB is EFI.

A table with status on some OS-support for GPT on Wikipedia, here
they have put up x64 as a requirement, for being able to boot from
    the disk, also.

What Windows-version is Home Server based on? XP?

Honestly I bet the 3TB drives will be just as expensive as a 128GB SSD, so if you are willing to drop down that much money on a giant storage drive you should be willing to get a really fast boot drive as well.
    Rig 1:
    ASUS P8Z77-V
    Intel i5 3570K @ 4.75GHz
    16GB of Team Xtreme DDR-2666 RAM (11-13-13-35-2T)
    Nvidia GTX 670 4GB SLI

    Rig 2:
    Asus Sabertooth 990FX
    AMD FX-8350 @ 5.6GHz
    16GB of Mushkin DDR-1866 RAM (8-9-8-26-1T)
AMD 6950 with 6970 bios flash

Yamakasi Catleap 2B overclocked to 120Hz refresh rate
    Audio-GD FUN DAC unit w/ AD797BRZ opamps
Sennheiser PC350 headset w/ hero mod
