Games/Programs that use 100% of your GPU - Overheating!

and benchmarking programs while we're at it too.

    1: Furmark
    2: Folding@Home GPU
    3: Star Trek Online - http://forums.startrekonline.com/sho...light=overheat
    4: OCCT GPU Test
    5: ?

Add more, give sources if you can.

For the record I believe that if the thermal solution of the GPU cannot handle the GPU at advertised clock speeds under 100% load then what was sold to you (the consumer) was not advertised correctly.

Don't forget most GPUs stock from the factory have seriously underclocked GPU fan speeds. You really SHOULD run an app that can set it to full speed before running such benchmarks.

When I took the stock block off my gtx 260 to put a water block on it, I noticed that the thermal pads on the memory sinks were super thick, and the gpu block had about 10 times as much thermal paste as there should have been.

for some reason once they STARTED using thermal paste they used way too much on GPU's

i've got a GF4 Ti4200 that i put an oldschool thermaltake heatsink upgrade kit on and there was ZERO thermal paste and i didnt know to put any on it back then either...

EVE online trial was doing it for me as well.

Star trek online maxes out GPU usage but only uses one core on my 5970.

My 5970 doesn't struggle under high loads but every other component in my machine struggles to cope with the heat it adds to the case. 6x 120mm fans can't even remove it all.

I think ATX is going to have to be replaced sooner than later if 300w GPUs and 150w CPUs continue to become the norm.

Good point, although you can already buy cases with inverted motherboards.

You need watercooling to counter most heat dump in the case though.

well when my fan stopped working once while playing CoD:WaW, the GPU maxed out and got way too hot, 101 C. It wasn't cool. no pun intended

Stalker Call of Pripyat and Crysis spring to mind
But yes Furmark especially the new 1.8 version is usually what cranks up the heat on poor GPU's

I've yet to play a game that heats up my GPU as much as Furmark and especially OCCT.

Does the GPU utilization meter in GPU-Z even work on Radeon 5K cards? I'll often play Bioshock2 and it'll show 0~25%.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.
