You're welcome for the pix.
As to the fan shifting and temps, all things being equal, the greater air flow provided by an extra inch should help with CPU temps.
But for me I had to shift the fans to install the Dominators and I had the room in the case, so I installed the fans that way and have not tested without the shift.
My immediate use of the machine is for folding, so I've not spent much time with CPU overclocking. Right now I have a BLCK=160 and CPUv=1.23750v to get 3360 MHz.
My GPUs overclock better and produce good folding scores.
To get better performance for GPU and CPU I would have to look at a case with better airflow or modify the one I have.
There is not enough air flow to get cool air into the case, as evidenced by the CPU temps going down 10C with the case open.
Good luck with your overclock. I have 975 stock performance at a 920 price, which was my only CPU OC goal.

Starting to get to grips with the memory setting on this board my best low timing setting upto now! Have found putting 2 120mm over the X58 chipset and mosets works a charm had to use 1.55v Qpi/Dram core voltage before i did this to get stable! Now i use 1.35v!

I got in my stuff from Newegg yesterday, so I'm pretty excited to get overclocking this weekend. See my sig for new system specs. Before this I had an e6300 running 24/7 at almost 100% overclock (1.86Ghz -> 3.5 Ghz) on water, so I'm hoping the i7 processor can do me proud as well.
I'll post my results once I get a chance to play with it. I can already tell I'm going to be useless at work today.
Theres some more pics of the noctua here. Its a different board but height should be the same, as phogger said moving the fan up solves the problem.

i didn't want to take a chance. bought the Venomous-X instead. very nice cooler. fits perfect and dropped my temps by >10C @ load
thanks for the pics bro

does your motherboard support westmere xeons?
I might pick an E5620...
I wanted to post a problem & resolution I came across recently... if I should start a new thread for this please let me know.
I noticed my CPU speed was not reading very high recently, only ~1600mhz total (it's a 2.8 ghz Core i7 930). All 8 cores could be tasked in Windows 7 so I wasn't sure what the problem was. At the same time, my power button stopped working. Put two and two together and checked the cables connections, naturally. The problem ended up being the adapter for the System panel connector (20-8 pin PANEL in bottom right corner of the board). This adapter is supposed to make your life easier so you can disconnect & reconnect all those panel connectors in one shot. And in theory it's a good idea, except that the adapter itself sits very loose on the pins. It slips right off pretty easily in fact, so I'm going to have to craft a way to get it to stay.
At any rate, after I secured the connection, my CPU voltage and speed were back up to normal. Just wanted to share this with anyone who might run into the same issue and save them some time.
Do any of you guys use Turbo V to O/C? I was curious because it would save alot of hassle rebooting your machine 100+ times when you can fine tweak through windows then once you get the stable setting, go in bios and change accordingly. Although I have heard that Software overclocking can be buggy as well and have a tendency of overvolting, is this the case with Turbo V?
It also cant be good on namely the hard drives rebooting your computer that much.
So which do you use BIOS or Software O/C to make minor adjustments?

I'm getting some off vcore results... can somebody tell if this is normal and if not, some possible causes?
I set to 1.1875. At idle in CPUZ it reads 1.16. Under load it droops to 1.136.
This is with spread spectrums off, line load off.
4.2 1.375 Vcore Fully stable! On my new watercooling setup!Loving this board! Just need to up my Memory clock now!

Okay I had some more time to fool around. I read a little about Line Load, and have renabled it to prevent that horrible vdroop I was getting.
I thought I could cheat a bit and jump right to a modest overclock with stock voltages, but no go so far. Are you guys manually setting your uncore clock? Does leaving it on auto cause you problems as you increase bclk, etc?
what oc are your trying to get and what cooling are you using ?
do you guys think this cards worth the price ?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-374-_-Product
I am aiming for 3800mhz on air (Noctua U12P SE2). My watercooling loop is going on another rig, and I don't really feel like dropping 250$ for another loop at the moment.
I need to start at the beginning and do a thorough evaluation of bclk with my CPU multi at 12x. I tried to jump straight to 180 manually setting stock voltages, and things are not working out. Other people seem to be fine with 1.2v on QPI, but perhaps I am not. Is the bclk governed by the vCore at all? I am a noob with this chipset and don't really know the ins and out yet. I will probably manually set the QPI frequency to just over 2x the ram for now to avoid any potential issues there.
Edit: As for the Radeon, I was never one of those people that has to have the best gfx card. The price to performance ratio on any brand-new, high end card makes me cringe. I always aim for more middle of the road. Hell, my old 8800GT can run SC2 beta at 1920 res with medium settings. That said, if you think it is worth it, than maybe for you it is. I think it is a fairly personal choice.
