    nikon sb-600

I know to fire it remotely off camera you need to have your in camera flash pooped up, but can I fire it remotely off camera if I but a remote slave and keep the internal flash closed?

OK, Ive been looking into it and it seems the only one I can see that would work is the su-800 wireless commander. I do not want to spend $300 just for the commander, then have to buy a sb600.

Any other wireless commanders that would work?

Not if you want TTL. I think you can use the SB-900 and SB-800 as well but not sure if they have to fire as well if they act as commander.
If you're using the Pop-Up flash as the commander when using CSL, it doesn't really affect the exposure when it fires unless you are really close to the subject or taking a picture of something reflective.
You can minimize it's effect by using an exposed 35mm film on it when popped up. Cause all the slave needs to fire is the pulses that the commander creates and not the intensity of light that comes off it.

That's how it worked with Sony/Minolta anyway and Nikon based their CLS off Minolta anyway and made it better.

You could get a cable. But like Elisha said, it doesn't really matter. I just set my on-camera flash to 1/128 power, which wouldn't even register properly in most cases if it were included in my exposure. I set it manually because I was having some problems with my SB-900 not triggering properly.
    Self-proclaimed and convincing.

You need something to act as a commander. Unfortunately that is either the onboard flash, another SB-600,800 or 900, or the SU800 as you said. On the D300s there is a setting to pop-up the onboard flash but have it not fire.... it is supposed to just pulse the metering pre-flashes but to my eye I'm still seeing it flash... my eyes could be playing tricks on me though and it's just the pre-flashes. I'm not sure if the D90 and D300 have this same setting...

EDIT Apparently the D90 does have the ability to NOT fire the onboard flash while using it in commander mode. Check page 188 in the online manual for instructions on how to setup.

Yea it took me a while to get it to work as well... I just got my sb-600 in December and it took me several reads to actually get it setup right. Several reads on the D300s manual to get it setup with pop-up flash as commander, then several reads of the sb-600 manual to get the remote triggering setup... I was starting to feel a little retarded.

Yes, I own a Nikon D90. do you need to have the flash popped up to remotely fire the sb-600?

Yes the flash needs to be up. It won't fire without the preflashes required for metering. You might be able to get it to fire in full manual without the flash popped up though.
