Gentle typhoon 1150 or 1450? Help meeeh

Hjelp . So I'm trying to make a system that will be quite quiet.System will have thermochill PA120.3 and most likely a single MCR220 or other 240mm rad. Both will have shrouds. so thats total of 5 fans there. Then the case will have 2x gentle typhoons that arent attached to rads and then 2x Lian Li 140mm fans (unless they are really loud, if so. ill switch them to GT)

So a total of 9 fans there and all will be controlled by scythe kaze server's semi mode. So when PC is idling, they will be running undervolted and when water temperature goes up, fans will start going full speed.

Now I've gotten a bit used to louder PC's since my last aircooled PC wasnt exactly quiet because of the freaking antec PSU that made insane noise so when the PC is under stress, it doesnt have to be all quiet but I still dont want it to be really loud either. Ill rather focus on the speaker sounds than fans.

So do you think I should use GT 1150 or 1450? Would the 1450GT's on radiators be considered "loud"? I realize that its impossible to say for sure without actually listening it real but I still wanna ask for opinions. Need to make the decision by next week so I can order the fans.

Depends on the person. For me anything over 1000 rpm is "loud". But i live in a very quiet place and i have a sensitive ear. And it looks like your case will have a bit too many fans, why the 2 extra GT not attached to rads, and why the 2x 140mm fans ? Cant you just create an airflow with the rad fans ?

The 1450 can imo be classified as silent. I have the 1850's and I even consider them to be quite silent. It depends on the user though.

If I were you I'd check out Martinm210's fan testing found here:

I like my fans at 800 tops. Having said that, I'd get the 1450s and turn them down with a fan controller. Useful for intensive tasks, when you can temporarily put some more air on the rads...

I haven't tested GT yet, but I should get 6 of them (1850 - heard they respond nicely to voltage regulation) today or tomorrow. I'll do some testing in comparison to Noctuas NF-P12 and Enermax Magmas.

Ill be waiting for your results ^^. I just tested my GT 800rpms. I put attached them to my MCR220 and put them on full rpm (850-900rpm according to kaze server) and already at like 30-50cm i couldnt hear them at all. So im really confused whether 1450rpm is gonna go over the limit. Im sure that 1150 will be good atleast but arghhh. dont know .

I like this comparison even better.

Starts with a (to me) unknown fan. After that S-Flex E -> Kaze -> Gentle Typhoon. The difference in noise/pitch/whine is amazing.

the extra 2 gentle typhoons will simply be for general airflow. there wont be so much air going through the radiators anyway and since I have 2 extra slots, I dont see a reason not to use them. Im thinking of using those 2 as exhausts because they have less flow restriction than the fans that are on radiators. So while there would be 5 radiators sucking cold air in with limited airflow (because of the radiators), there would be 2 gentle typhoons + PSU pushing air out. SO that might be a ok airflow for the case.

Im going to ditch the 140mm fans. Tested them today and they were too damn loud. Even at 1000rpm i heard them from over 2 meters away.

I did some testing of Noctua's NF-P12 and Scythe GT. I'm still waiting for Enermax Magmas to arrive. I compared the fans at similar RPM:

Temps are delta Coolant - Ambient
    900 - Noctua 5,7, Scythe 5
    1100 - Noctua 4,3, Scythe 4
    1300 - Noctua 3,6, Scythe 3

I did the test while runing Intel Burn Test. I'll do some noise comparison later tonight, as it's a bit too loud at the moment.

Looking forward to your results of the Enermax fans, i was planning to buy them but i ended up with some GT's because i couldnt find too much info about the Magma's.

personally i say go for some gt 1850's and get a fan controller. you can tune the fans to the rpm of your liking and if you ever need more cooling power you can simply increase the voltage instead of buying new fans. i am also curious about the magmas.

How low RPM can the GT 1850 start at ? If it can start with like 500RPM I dont see the reason going for lower unless you dont have a fan controll?

Around 700RPM, I have those and they are brilliant.

Well, I must say that the ball bearing in Gentle Typhoons is getting annoying after a while.

The GTs sound more broadband, but other than that, not a lot quieter that the tri-cool at the same speed. Given the apparent quality of the mic, room noise, variables, etc. I'm not so sure how much weight I'd give that vid

The problem is that they will be automaticly controlled by temperature with a fan controller. So they will always be undervolted when the PC is idling but fans start going full speed when temps go up. So I dont want the PC to be noisy when gaming either :P

I dont think the double ball bearing really annoys me. I mean, it is reaaaally annoying when up close, but when you get a bit distance, you just cant hear it anymore.

I say go with the higher RPM ones as you will be running them slower and have the option to run them faster if you so choose in the future. Furthermore, the higher RPM ones will likely give you a more granular control over RPMs and may have better noise characteristics at lower RPMs (this is insight I picked up from warriorpoet and my own experience). For example, I will be picking up several S-FLEX F's but will run them around 800RPM almost always. This because the price is not different, I prefer the future options, and they can be further undervolted than the S-FLEX D (low RPM version) can.

Yes. The ball bearing generates additional noise, on top of air turbulence, which I don't like. Even at low RPM it stands out from the noise of the rest of my PC.
