My view...drink driving = automatic 12 months jail....drink driving and injure someone (in car or not) = automatic 10 years minimum...drink driving causing death = LIFE

I really hope your friend pulls through...it'd hard when you can't DO anything...you hang in there too

What are you even talking about?!?!? People on Cell phones are soon to pass drunks as the leading killers on the road.

I was nearly killed when some woman in an SUV ran a stop-sign onto the highway the night of Feb 1, 2008. I went from 65 to 0 in 15 feet, broke her SUV nearly in half, bled internally and lost 1/2 of my large intestine...

Your anger and frustration here are palpable and completely justified.

It isn't that people don't read your message and misunderstand the circumstances, it is that people generally don't care but care enough to put forth their folksy wisdom.

Wow man that sucks. Glad you made it.

Ironically, I just did a presentation in school about this very subject. Well, texting while driving. And it's pretty scary, you're 25 times more likely to get in to a fatal collision than a sober driver, and 2.5 x more likely than a drunk driver.

Even scarier than that, the reaction time of the drunk is faster than the sober texter by 33%.

It's hard for some people to tell whether they are over the limit or not. One needs to be extremely disciplined to know their limit.

Very sad to hear about all of these "accidents." My best wishes to you, your families, and your friends (including me!).

I don't mean to rain on everyone's "poor me" parade, but the world is made of pain.

Allow me to illustrate a few examples.
I had cancer in '06. Chemo and surgery followed shortly after. Then I declared bankruptcy. Now, what is different about my story? Not. A. Goddamn. Single. Thing. I had no financial assistance whatsoever. And I never expected any. I don't carry insurance and hope to hell I never have to.
Our m0da mentions self-discipline in determining one's alcohol limit. Well, what about the self-discipline for moderate exercise? Just a slight alteration in life style methods, with out pharmacuticals, has the potential to extend life by decades. Health insurance will not prevent illness/disease. Health insurance will not change the mental standing of a person or persons from larding themselves out cheetos and yohoo, from eat Long John Silvers, from eating at Red Lobster, and it will not encourage defensive driving.

It's very easy to know the limit - if you drink, DONT DRIVE. Doesn't matter if you have a single beer - nope, thats no driving for minimum of 2 hours. If i go out drinking, i take a cab/public transport/get a lift.

I refuse to participate in any debate with creationists because doing so would give them the "oxygen of respectability" that they want.
Creationists don't mind being beaten in an argument. What matters to them is that I give them recognition by bothering to argue with them in public.

Yeah, it's really simple. If you drink, you get yourself someone sober to drive you. If you drive, you sober up 2 hours for every beer you drank.
    Nothing more, nothing less.

I have a tendency to sms while driving, not much though, but 1-2 times a week and I am kinda disappointed over myself that I don't stop this because even though I glance up all time I notice I miss things and in traffic that is full of small dangerous events that pop up in an instant it really should not be done.
I am quiting this completely as of now.
Calling without handsfree is also a thing I do, but I really don't find that more distracting than talking with a passenger. Although I am pretty sure they say that also reduces your ability.
I am also quiting this completely.

Yes, one beer: minimum 2 hours, but mostly no driving before a good night sleep, completely agree.

Disciplined and drunk don't belong in the same sentence, once you're drunk you have absolutely no idea. The only method that should be relied upon are the breathalizers, they're only $50. Consider it $50 spent to save your own life, and possibly someone elses because accidents do happen.

Friend of mine and his date were run down and paralyzed for life by a drunk driver. 2 weeks earlier the drunk had been given probation for being an "Habitual Violator" with 2 previous DWI accidents.
    Louisiana has weak drinking laws.

If I were you I would take that gun and go square things up for her. Hehe
Boy that info was old. As am I. Currently my kids have taken over my desktops. They are both sporting matching GTX1080's. Last Christmas I got everyone Oculuses and thus GTX1080's. My eldest is some sort of CSGO champion gold label something or other. Me I work and shoot real guns. Build Comps as needed.

So you think people are not doing anything wrong when driving under influence, as long as they aren't "drunk"?
Getting pulled over and not passing a field sobriety test is enough evidence for me that you shouldn't be driving.

thats not what way saying, what i meant was that the breathalyzer just encourages people to get right under the legal limit and had nothing to do with if they were ok or not to drive. every1 is different and i personally think that driving tiered and distracted is the largest problem, but then are some stupid people who drive when they know that they shouldent.

i draw the line at 2 drinks or if i cant walk in straight line, but i also dont do much drinking in public, and when i do drink its within walking distance some1 that im hanging out with whose house i can crash at (or my own).

Here in sweden we've a zero tolerance law. Above 0.2 promille counts as drunk driving and you will get a ticket best case, 0.8 and you loose your driverslicense, either have to pay alot or go to jail for a few months, sometimes even both. Once you lost your drivers license you will have to do everything with theory tests, and practice driving from scratch without exceptions, I even think you have to wait 2-3 years before you're even allowed to get your new license.

If you harm someone under influence (above 0.2) and get them killed it counts as murder, we even have a law for driving "sleepy" as your reaction could be similar as when driving drunk.

Sorry to hear about your frined kai, hope she regains her memory That driver deserves whatever punishment he gets.

You agree that a breathalyzer can determine whether or not you can be arrested for driving intoxicated, but at the same time disagree that if you owned a breathalyzer (and of course use it) it wouldn't be useful to determine you should drive?

You'd be arrested for being a risk to others, not for having a good time. Breathalyzers are merely a physical reminder, of the well known fact(which is only an idea, the type of thing easily forgotten when intoxicated.) that driving after drinking alcohol is a risk to your own life. Most people who have willfully purchased a breathalyzer, don't ever use the thing just keep it in their glove box or purse.

edit: i replied before reading the rest of the thread.

@zanzabar: you have a good point that people could use breathalyzers as a way of justifying driving under the influence of a .7%, however if you've ever played around with a breathalyzer you'd realize how easily you reach .8% BAC.

random alcohol trivia, on a per mile basis you're more likely to be injured walking than driving. apparently drunk people can't resist the shiny lights. (... just finished reading the book Superfreakenomics, highly recommend it.)
