Should I upgrade to quad core mobile or stick with the dual?

So I have the chance to pick up Intel Core 2 Quad Mobile Processor Q9000 2.0GHz 6MB, Pretty cheap but will it actually outperform the Intel Core 2 Due Mobile Processor P8700, 2.53 Ghz, 3 MB that I already have? Money is not the issuse I just want a little better performace

If you encode video, or render photos a lot then the quad will dwarf the dual. If all you do is internet/email/streaming and gaming.....then you'd see very little performance increase with the quad.

i would say it's not worth the money. do a google search and try to find reviews including the games you like to play and how they perform on certain cpu's. i think you'll find that most games prefer speedy dual cores to quads.

I'd say no. Your current dual core is clocked faster, by 0.5GHz, which is quite a lot, but the quad has 2 extra cores. Depends what game really, games that use quads will do same/a little better, and games that don't use quads will do same/worse.

Would the larger cache help for gaming? Or would the lower frequency and higher heat output cancel any benefit?

core2quad mobile parts are slow, for most people (unless u do encoding) the 2.8 or 3.0ghz dual is better. the mobile i7/8 however is nice since it has turbo so with 2 threads its 2.8 and with 4 its 2.2 but on battery its 1.6

Yeah I wish my Laptop was compatible with the i7 this wouldn't be an issue. So maybe I will go with a higher clocked dual core. The p8700 runs @ 2.8 in turbo mode so is it even worth the higher clocked cpu. Any suggestion to which cpu I should go for. By the way this is a Asus G72GX. Does the L2 Cache of 6mb make a big difference than the 3mb L2 with the same clock speed?

as far as i can tell the extra cache may give you a few extra FPS but once again not worth the extra cache to get it. just save your cash and use it down the road, honestly core 2 is slowly on the way out. it has a lot of life left but not worth upgrading right now
