Rampage Extreme - the truth about OC and DDR3?

Hi all,

I've been doing some research regarding the Asus Rampage Extreme (x48 chipset), more specifically concerning the best memory to use for it.

The general consensus seems to be that it's best to stick to 1GB DIMM's and keep this to 2x1GB (best) or 4x1GB (possible) when intending to overclock.

Some others have said 2x2GB is fine for overclocking too.

I've also stumbled across quite a few people saying 4x2GB is very problematic at 1600MHz or higher memory speeds but then a few others have been along the lines of "I am running 4x2GB at PC2-12800 speeds just fine, 24h Prime95 stable etc.). They don't appear to be talking BS.

It would appear that despite it not officially supported by Intel (the X48 chipset that is), the Rampage Extreme can be a good overclocking with all four DIMM slots filled. From my findings I believe it's just down to the memory IC's...

So here's my question. What do you guys and gals think? Are the new Corsair/G.Skill/Geil Lynnfield qualified kits (kits of 2 DIMM's) that run at 1.65V and feature Elpida BBSE's (if I'm right) OK for the Rampage Extreme, or should I stick to the older 1.7-1.9V DDR3 kits that are becoming rare now?

Corsair has some nice Dominator GT kits out there now so perhaps...?

Looking for 1600-1800MHz memory speed and 8GB if possible.

I think the less memory you use the more overclocking you get.

you can put in 8 gb but your overclock will suffer bigtime
i was able to do 1600mhz with 8gb of d9
it gets even worse with quads

2x2 gigs of elpida works like a charm, can't comment on more.

2x2gb of micron works great here.
Haven't been able to test any more than that though.
