Right now I'm leaning heavily towards buying this board (the others I'm considering are the Asus P6T7 and Rampage II Extreme).

Has anyone run into any Northbridge temperature problems by not using the supplemental heatsink? Also, is the top of the water block removable?

    Thanks!

Yes, the top of the waterblock is removable, that is how the passive heatpipe heatsink is installed. It shows it in the user manual that can be downloaded from Gigabytes website.

    I have a question,

how many times the board restart when booting with overclocked settings? mine does 4 times until actual boot.
it doesn't happen with stock settings.

first time using giga board and i thought this was normal, what should i check ?

EDIT: i want to clarify, what i mean restart here is post code recycle several times before post ( 1 beep ), sorry for bad explanation.

Nyeah, mine will do the multiple post code when I am trying high settings that it doesn't seam to like, I am still experimenting with my settings but @ 4.2 200x21 it does not do it at all.

I finally got my Mega Shadow to replace my CNPS 9900ALED and Holy what an improvement!!! The idle temps are better by about 4 degree's c on the Zalman at idle but under load the Mega Shadow stomped all over it. Mounted vertical (fans blowing out of the back) I dropped about 9c from the 9900 and mounted horizontal (fans blowing up) I dropped about 12c from the 9900 under load

I do want to add that mounting the Mega Shadow horizontal the fins do touch the tall ram sinks of my Hyper X in the second slot. It does fit but pushes against the stick a bit but it does not appear to hinder the performance. So mounting this heatsink horizontal using the first slot with tall ram coolers will not be possible.

So far havent been able to get 222 stable on AIR,

tried many settings here, but nothing seems to work for me so far,

    rest of the system:

    W3540
    Dominator GT 1866CL7
    HX1000W
    XFX5770

Pci-e doesnt really seem to help, at least not around the 220 area.
going to try some more specific settings, but i was hoping to get 222 pretty easily, so that's a bit of a bummer.

Anyhow, ill be putting it under my singlestage tomorrow aswell, hopefully she will start shining then

I haven't been able to break 225ish. However I also have not tried throwing it under phase yet. Hopefully will have time tomorrow as well.

All i care for is how it performs under liquid nitrogen really, if i can get the max from my W3540, which requires roughly 240 block, or a bit more.
Anyhow, cant wait, will report back with some pretty numbers i hope!

Awesome. Glad its workin for ya. I just got my replacement parts for my Megahalems today. Frozen CPU sent them Overnight free of charge. They are awesome. I'm seeing about 2c cooler vertical mount over my TRUE using the same fans. The Megahelms is a little noisier though. I have my EVGA Classified installed atm and i'm loving it. My UD7 must not be one of the better ones, the EVGA is just so much more forgiving. Damn thing boots on whatever setting i throw at it it seems like. My UD7 is real Picky. I think i'll RMA it and try again. On the Classy for 4400 (210x21) with my W3250 from the egg, the only voltages changed were 1.34v Vcore and +200 VTT. Ran 200 passes IBT on very high setting last night, 1.38v in windows = max 89c during 200 passes. HT is off though. AIR and HT @ 1.38v = 99c. Water will be installed soon....

What do yall think... would you run 4200mhz with HT, or 4400mhz without?

Another thing i couldnt do with the UD7 is adjust uncore. Auto seemed to be the only setting that would work. With the EVGA i was able to get some great memory improvements... Here is Uncore on Auto and then x20 (4215)
Could someone else try to up uncore on the UD7 and see if your stable?

    uncore Auto and at x20

so, what you're saying if the settings are right there's no multiple post code recycle ?

mega shadow is great, why not consider noctua nh-d14? i read the reviews and the performance is promising,
but if it's personal preferences and taste, then..

Maybe, not right but more favorable
I would have preferred to get the Noctura D14 but there is no possible way I was going to be able to make it fit with my tall ram heatsinks and the northbridge heatpipe assembly.

On a side note I have been able to hit 4.4 with 21x210 @ 1.250v with ht off but I am struggling getting it stable with those settings and ht on. Any helpful hints

    Edit:
I was able to get 4.4 with ht stable ( more testing is still required to be sure ) but I needed 1.3125vcore and my load temps were 86/85/82/80, that's hotter than I would like but I will continue tinkering.

Dude if you have 4400 ht stable with those temps your doing great for air. and 1.31v 4400 ht stable is awesome too. great chip you have there. How are you loading? Prime95. linX, IBT? I guess i need to know that before i tell you how good it is lol... Dont worry about those temps you posted.... With intel cooler you'll get those temps and higher with HT on and fully loaded. If intel thinks its ok, i sure wouldnt let it bother me. Yeah it would be great to have sub 70c on air @ 4400, but that just isnt gonna happen with 8 threads. If i had your temps with HT on @ 4400, that would be my 24/7 without a second thought. I cant get those temps @ 4400 with HT off! and thats with a 920, 950 and w3520... with TRUE or Megahalem with 38mm panaflos.. Great Job.

I guess I should have specified, I used prime95, 8 threads, blended for a half of an hour but like I said I will run it longer just to be sure its 100% Thx for the reply Nugz I think once the as5 settles and I drill down some other voltages it may get better .... btw Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you! I know its not a big list, theres 64 on it so far, you would have the best clocks with air cooling.. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=236567

    I got my system.

First impression is that I need to set QPI/VTT voltage to 1.40+ to get above 180 BCLK. The CPU clock seems to scale normal (4.2 GHz stable 1 hour PRIME95 at 1.3V), but I get random BSODs with low QPI/VTT voltages. Even at 1.40V that seemed stable, it did BSOD after 6 hours of stressing at 201 BCLK . I wonder if it has to do with the 12 GB of RAM

Anyway, testing has just started. I'll find out where the limits are soon enough
    CPU: Core i7 920 D0 @4.2 GHz 21x200, 3.8 GHz uncore, 1.41875 Vcore, 1,56V QPI/VTT
    Cooling: Zalman CPNS9900 with AS5
    Mainboard: Giga-Byte X58A-UD7
    RAM: 12 GB Corsair 1600 CMD12GX3M6A1600C8
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 280 713/1428/1350 @ stock voltages
Video Card cooling: Thermalright HR-03 GTX, heatspreader removed, AS5
    PSU: Enermax 1KW Galaxy

I think it has to do with the 12GB, i dont get any gains above 1.25 / 1.3VTT it seems.
Nor do i get any benefit from anything above 100 pci-e it seems :S weird...

anyhow, im mounting my Singlestage now, hope to see some nice results!

thijs, I can't wait to see your ss results, I am struggling to get higher, do you run your ss 24/7? I have a Asetek VapoChill LS that I would love to use but I can't find a 1366 kit for it and also would hate to fry a $350 mobo

I had to go up on my core a bit but I should be running some long stress tests tonight. Here is a couple super pi runs and cpuz in a screenshot along with 3dmark vantage and 3dmark06 compare links:

I find it odd that neither 3dmark vantage or 3dmark06 can correctly read my cpu frequency .... anyone else notice this?

    3dmark06

Nugz, my batch number is 3938B024, can I update that sheet you linked me to? I need to up the voltage that I entered as 1.3125 was crashing under heavy load after 20 min or so I will try at 1.3250 later tonight.

Hey, been trying for a bit, nothing spectaculair yet really, perhaps it needs more cold but havent been able to get 230 bclock 32M stable yet, and i need to get it up untill 236 / 240ish stable, els im just buying another classified and pray i dont have a low coldboot problem or whatever.

Going to see how high i can get the baseclock now , single channel + qpi slow mode should yield me 240+ , ill report back!

    //edit

lol, i thought, what the heck, put it on 1.46VTT , and it's at loop 7 for superpi 32M now, nice, perhaps all she needs ( my 3540 that is ) is some vtt luv!

    //edit 230 bclock 32M pass , trying 232 now, looks good!
    //edit 232 bclock 32M pass! , it's looking good, testing 235 now still with 1.46VTT, at loop4 it's on a roll!!

Throw my the phase back on today. 4.7GHz, 225 bclk first time booting. Will attempt to find the maximum blck for this board.

At what point does does increasing the PCIe MHz become less effective. My soundcard starts cutting out around 107MHz. Will this be enough?

Maximum for me seems to be 237 32M stable atm, it's half way now i think with the 32M test.
238 wont boot with anything from 108 - 120 , 1.5VTT and it goes in QPI slow mode it seems.

PLL is still at 1.8V tho, ill try 1.4V, but doubt it'll make any difference.

I hope, and think liquid nitrogen @ - 110 / -115 ( my coldbug of cpu ) will give a few more bclocks.

But 237 is something im really happy with so far, good stuff!

23 x 237 = 5451 mhz , i know my cpu can go harder, been up to 5,5ghz with triple channel / and normal qpi,
if i can get 240+- bclock going , its deff a keeper. if it stays at 237, ill still keep it :P

I guess im getting my dewars filled in a week or 2, so we'll find out then!
