The 790XT-UD4P from Gigabyte has treated me well. For a mid range board it has unlocking features and overclocks well. Unlocked my 550BE to all 4 cores and will see it up to 3850MHz while it's still a dual core.

Other users also rate the GD70 from MSI but I have no personal experience with it.

I'd go with MSI myself, seems to be the best board around.

This one died with only water cooling......4 hours total time on the board.

^ My friend has that board. He has had a 720be + 2x2 mushkin ddr3 ram [not sure which set] at a 25% overclock for the past 8 months.

    Runs like a charm still.

Video card....really can't beat the Radeon 5770 (anywhere from 160 CDN to 190 CDN). It has Direct X 11 support and is just as fast as a 4870 (+/- a few %'s in certain games).

Personally I like Gigabyte mobos for AMD builds. Haven't had a single one die yet...of course I'm not as hard on them as Chew is.

You said yourself thought that this board felt weaker compared to others of it's kind. I myself have pushed my board pretty hard during bench sessions and all is well so far.

Though you're kinda making me rethink getting a NB waterblock. ;D

Yep thats what it felt like.

The million dollar question is why was it weaker, and what actually blew up if it wasn't a mosfet.

Granted prime blend at 4240 is stressfull......but then again I tossed same chip in gigabyte and pulled off a 4250 prime blend.

I totally expect boards to die under ln2.......they just aren't built for that, air and water this should not be an issue, couple that with the fact that this is on a bench rig with multiple fans cooling everything......I would muster a guess that in a stifled case with not as much airflow that it would have died even sooner.

I still like the boards.......but unlike zalbard I will not lay claims that any board is better than the rest.

I will say XXX board is really good at this and that. That said if shooting for a nice mild OC, I really like the performance and layout of the msi. If pushing the extremes I would avoid it.

I am excited to get my new waterloop up and a c3 to see what it can do. I hope the GD70 does me well because I purchased it with water in mind. My girlfriend and I are going to Europe to visit her family for a couple of weeks in December and I'm going to order the anfi-tech mosfet block for my board while I'm there and than hopefully get it all up and running when I return.

and then on to the giga and cold.

take a look at current DFI offerings as well. The DK 790FXB-M3H5 is very nice, if u want to go a bit cheaper, u can look at the JR 790gx-m3h5 or even the BI 785g-m35. All overclock and perform similar, just differ in size, features and therefore price...
