ATI Radeon HD 5770 Black screen

Whenever I update the driver on my ATI Radeon HD 5770 all I get is a black screen. The card is installed correctly and there are no other graphics driver on my computer. If I restart my computer my screen will go black when windows starts up. I have tried installing the driver from pretty much everywhere I could find them and every way I could.

I have been trying to fix this for weeks and it would be great if someone could give me a solution. Thanks!

Dude you need to post this in the ATI section, you wont get much (if any) help in here.

What type of cable do you use to connect from your card to your screen?

I use a VGA cable with a DVI adapter. I have also tried connecting without the adapter and I still have a black screen. I tried connecting the computer to my 21inch tv through HDMI but still a black screen. My native resolution is 1600x900.

You're definitely plugging the monitor cable into the card and not the onboard port right?

Please elaborate what you mean when you say ''Whenever I update the driver on my ATI Radeon HD 5770 all I get is a black screen''.
Does this mean you get video on the screen but when you update the drivers the screen loses signal?

My screen never loses signal. Once I update my drivers the screen will go black but the monitor status will still be active, and the resolution is 1024x768 70Hz if I remember correctly.
The resolution doesn't seem to be the problem as I have started windows in 640x480 through the bios.

Have you tried going into safe mode? Does it work?

What's good is that you have an integrated GPU. So your best bet at this rate would be delete the new (updated) drivers, and install the old ones, and it'll work.

Other than that you can try taking the card to a alternate computer (friend's house?), installing the card + new drivers and seeing if the same thing happens there. The problem could potentially be with the onboard GPU, if you test it at an alternate computer and the same thing happens, then its definitely your GPU.

I have the old drivers from the disk installed on my new computer. The reason I want to update them is because Fraps FPS drops significantly, usually caused by out of date driver and I do videos/commentaries on youtube:

The FPS on some of the videos on my channel are pretty good but a lot of the time the FPS is awful. Without recording 100-120 FPS, with recording 1-9 FPS.

As Perkam said - probably best to use the onboard graphics to get in to Windows and remove those old drivers, then install the newest ones off the site.
What version of Catalyst are you trying to update to? I had a few issues trying to update to the 11.4 drivers.

If that was the reason, then have you tried recording with Xfire?

No but I have always used fraps and I don't want to change. Fraps isn't the only thing the videos drivers a preventing me from doing, I need Open GL to run some applications and the only way I know how to get it is by downloading the latest video drivers.

    Tried the safe-mode advice yet?

Safe mode works and I am able to install older drivers, but like I said the reason I need the latest drivers is because of Fraps.

Ok, but what about installing new drivers in safe mode?
Forget about those old drivers on your disc.

The same thing will happen. Reason being is because they are applied after reboot in safe mode.
