While there might be some actual concern from the doctors about keeping her so long, unfortunately money has become an issue as well these days...

Here in Portugal we have other concerns: the public system (which is VERY good, btw, though with usually outdated machinery) is over-taxed, so doctors just want to get patients out of the door ASAP.

Also, and related to cancer patients, more and more of them have been said "sorry, your funding limit expired, so I'm afraid you'll need to revert to the public system", which sometimes takes MONTHS just to schedule the FIRST consult (yeah, you all are seeing what this causes, right?)

    Good luck.

That's what we like to hear! Going strong and kickin some cancer ASCII!

Now the part that really intrigues me - How'd you get watermelons to grow in that clay? I tried before, got cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, peas... yada yada... but never could get any good watermelon.

Well where I am its not all clay, some good top soil where the trees where. I also got lucky and a friend of mine gave me a bunch of sandy loam, I had to carry a tractor over there to load with and hauled dirt for several days with a 7 yd dump trailer. I also went to madisonville and got about 10 or 12 loads of the mushroom farm compost and tilling it in.

I have gotten several watermelons and cantaloupes to grow in the sandy loam though by just adding a little miracle grow plant food. I started in April with a backhoe and made a small garden, now I have a 6' 3 point hitch rototiller, a disc bedder or hiller, got a seeder that will be here Friday. I have about an acre of gardens. I will make a thread in the WCG section with some pictures before I derail this thread...

    Gardening, anyone?

All this talk of gardening makes me nostalgic. Before arthritis got to my knees and hips I had a lovely herb and veggie garden. Now my cucumbers have wax on them, and tomatoes have no taste. Surprises me to find "crunchers" into gardening!

An update, mom got the CT scan results today from the scan yesterday. Still cancer free at this point. We were scared it might have moved to the brain because she was having some headaches...
