I dont think my Antec Kuhler H2O 620 is good enough for going over 1.4v, but for a cheapo midrange cooler its doing a damn fine job on a 4.5 Ghz I7 980.

I fixed it by adding a third high CFM at the top case exhaust, but as an intake fan blowing onto the CPU area, and two more of the same fans were already set up as push pull exhausts on the h2o 620s radiator.

This dropped my temps to <60 at 4 ghz, and <90 at 4.5 ghz on a cheap cooler

The fans are silent too - 1500 RPM Xigmatek fans hat push 63 cfm

I should buy another two of them for my case intake fans.
You need to use more memory when you run linx to get real stress.
Also, you should boot diagnostic mode when running linx for best results/stress.
Start -> Run -> msconfig -> click the diagnostic mode radio button and click OK -> Restart
To undo it, follow the same steps and choose the normal mode radio button and restart.
For HT on and 12gb, test the 9216MB problem size. 5120MB at least...

    Vcore adjusted but not optimized

I think its the sensors and not your thermal paste. I have remounted the water block and the temps arent close to being even between cores. I go by the highest temp, which happens to be the last core on my CPU.

We have almost identical specs :p

I see no 9 Gb option so I will use 8 Gb.

Awww, my cooler and fans are no use when selecting 8 Gb

99 degrees reached after a few attempts.

Yup, I don't think any Gulftown has hit 4.5GHz linx stable on the stock cooler.
Maybe don, spool or cryptik can do it. Even with chips like theirs temps would be in the red though.
You can type in 9216 into the memory box and get 9GB.

The 4.6GHz in my sig was my old HT off submission. Turning HT off will drop your temps down ~8-10C on load!
    I'm running a 980x now at 4.4GHz HT on with 18GB (3x4GB + 3x2GB) at 1833MHz at 8-9-8-24-1T Haven't updated the sig yet.

Very impressive, this is what I was looking for. 4.8Ghz @ 1.352v is bearly within the Intel VID range (.6-1.35v). Do you have "CPU Loadline Calibration" (or something like that) turned on?

Just grab a costa rica 2600k will give you 5g stable for daily use and hella faster

Getting there, last best run errorred on the third pass. Only 101GFLOPS but HT is enabled and its running on 32GB so it'll have to go overnight. Will retest with HT off and do two submissions. If it makes it through the night.

Sorry to nitpick but aren't you supposed to have LinX running when you take the 21+ run screenshot?

Oh no, that was on my Antec H2O 620 lol. I'm not daft enough to push that high on the stock cooler.

I removed the H2O 620 as soon as I realised it was insufficient, and just put in the stock cooler for fun while waiting for my new phanteks.

I have the phantecs now, but 4.5 Ghz with HT on still maxes out at 96 degrees, and crashes withing 10-15 mins of linx.

Running it without HT @ 4.5 Ghz keeps it under 85 degrees and stable though, but I cant be bothered leaving it running in Linx for ages. Is not crashed in anything at 4.5 Ghz and HT off, and the temperatures are great so I will leave it at that

With only 6 threads I'm only up to 103GFLOPs What gives and with category does the above HT enabled test go in?

yea, you should be way higher than 103gflops unless you don't have Win7 SP1 installed (that enabled AVX right?). If you have SP1, you're gonna need to try tweaking your voltages a little more to get higher gflops.

Also, in order for you to be added to the OP (which zalbard said wouldn't happen for a while cuz he's busy) you have to have a SS while running the 21+ pass and should be using within a GB or two of your total system memory in the Linx runs.

:edit: fixed thread manager name sorry zalbard!

zalbard maintains this thread. I haven't started the high performance computing thread yet because I wanted to see BD and SB-E results to make sure the scale we determined would still be valid. Since SB-E sucks so badly, it looks like we won't have to make any changes.

you really think it sucks that bad? I mean, Ace.'s post with 190+ Gflops is pretty incredible. If you were expecting something faster than Sandy Bridge on a single core basis... well then yea it sucks.

:edit: If you ask me, bulldozer was more of a flop than anything. AMD has some serious catching up to do. Without any competition on their heels, Intel is just gonna sit back and enjoy the glory rather than make vast improvements to their processors.

Is there another performance thread starting and is it only for the BD and SB-E chips?

Sorry, I've not been checking threads lately (except my comment a few posts up).

I am starting a new thread. My intention is to be able to include all cpus. Control all variables very tightly so that we have apples-to-apples comparisons of different hardware. I have been busy lately, myself. So it hasn't happened yet. I also am waiting on an RMA of a GPU for my main rig.

Well as Zoson says, 4.6 Ghz = 100 Gflops:

Its only stable for 20 mins, but I think that is due to temperatures creeping up a bit too high

I'll try it out with gaming at 4.66 Ghz CPU and 1866 Mhz ram, it should be fine as it wont be reaching anywhere near 100% load. This is the absolute limit for both the CPU and ram in my build, but I'm very happy with it.

What is the FPO/Batch # of your 980? Your chip performs almost identically to the 970 which I had a few months back, doing 4.5GHz with hyperthreading @ only 1.384v and 4.625GHz (no HT) @ 1.44v. I just bought a new retail 980 (3003A957) and am hoping for similar performance - would be very happy if I get what you got!!

    Here:

It definitely wont do 4.5 ghz with HT under 1.4v, but it seems good for 4.6 Ghz on 1.425v with HT off. I'm running it at 4.66 with minor instability so putting it down to 4.6 should be fine, but I want to try and get it stable at 4.66 Ghz and 1866 Mhz ram which is the best that my build will run at on air.

I'll get myself a 4 pin to 8 pin ATX connector next week and see if that helps as I'll have 4 more CPU ATX pins powered.

I'm surprised a monster CPU like the 980 works without 8-pin EPS, LOL Your batch 3118 is new (mid 2011) which I've not seen before on a 980 - it looks like a great batch. The seller told me the 980 I bought is 3003A957 which is actually a 980X batch number, so I might be getting an extreme CPU by mistake?! LOL

Technically you are not using "air" cooling - a Silver Arrow would probably perform quite a bit better than the Kuhler 620 with a heavy load like the 980.
