This is a little bit of a necro but was just wondering if anyone has updated to 2.1 (be it over the air or self install). Let me know about your experiences with it if you've got it.
I got the the Firmware 2.1-update1 (over the air ) last night. Phone seems to be a little more snappy. I didn't play with it to much as the update was right before I was going to bed. But I do see I got a new app called News and weather. Funny thing is my brother has had his Droid for 2 weeks longer than me on his own plan and still hasn't got the new Firmware update and we live in the same house.
i did the manual install yesterday and it went smooth as butter. they're releasing the update in sections of people to keep the network from shutting down or something. anyway yes the new weather and news widget is much better than the first one, the new gallery app is WAY better than the first one, and live wallpapers rocks my world. i've never used pinch to zoom but it works well in the browser now so all in all a great update to a great phone! i love my droid..

Ah... after playing with a Droid, I really want one. Still... AT&T has a termination fee that I would have to pay to switch to Verizon.
Verizon is tempting because of their huge coverage area...
And they may be getting the iPhone this summer. This gonna be a good year for tech in general. I wish I had money..

isnt this XS? i haven't been on a stock rom in months. running 1.1ghz w/ downclocking and OC profiles based on battery life left and temps and the battery lasts longer than before. i'd recommend looking here: http://alldroid.org/forums/896-Droid
Yeah, this Droid I have been playing with, I had it at 950MHz until today, when I updated to Android 2.1, which de-rooted me. I'm loving Android 2.1 so far; but the live wallpapers cause a lot of lag... Maybe if I were back at 950MHz it would be a little smoother.
I'd totally get a Milestone, but as of yet, you can't overclock them, so it's a no-go.
I've been going back and forth between CyanogenMod and BuglessBeast. I'm currently on BuglessBeast with Chevy's 7 slot 1.1ghz kernal. Sooooo smooth.

I'm excited, I ordered a Nexus One yesterday, and it should be here soon.
I'll miss the Droid/Milestone's hardware keyboard, but it's hard to resist a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM.
It's funny, the keyboard is prolly last thing i will miss about this phone..

So anyone wanna chime in on the various roots out there? Likes/dislikes. I'm getting the rooting bug mostly because I want as much of a lag free experience as possible.

By roots I'm assuming you mean ROMs? There are really on 2 versions of the superuser app (aka root).
As far as ROMs go CyanogenMod is an amazingly stable and feature packed ground up build from AOSP. It is THE Rom. Koush the developer of the Cyanogen port to Droid also developed the ROM Manager app in the Market. You can download and install for free. It doesn't root your phone but it downloads and installs CyanogenMod. The paid version of ROM Manager gives you access to themes and other ROMs.
Pete just released BuglessBest V1.0 the other day and it too is epic. I just installed it today and it is definitely giving CyanogenMod a run for its money. BuglessBeast is definitely faster than CyanogenMod so far.
others:
The other ROMs aren't great. RedRum is decent and so is SimplyStunning. Your best bet is purchasing ROM Manager and trying a few of them.
