Exclamation XFX HD 5870 having bad issues

i just got my XFX HD 5870 today and it seems when ever i try a driver i get these lines on my desk top as you can see here in this pictures.

and i notice that with a driver the gpu temps are like in the low 30C and there shouldn't be no problem with temps like this at all.

here it is with no driver installed and if you look at the bottom right corner in the blue icon those are the GPU temps from Everest.

but after there is no driver the temps are back up around 60C and you would think there would be problems but i do not get any lines on my desk top at all.

also these are done in win7 since my vista is mess up right long story short driver sweeper v2.0.5 deleted all my games and a lot of my programs that were installed for some unknown reason. it had a very weird error on it when i went to uninstall a ATI driver. don't remember what it was now.

but i went from only having 180gig of free space left to now having 380gigs of free space left so yeah im not to happy.

and the driver i am using is the latest from AMD to the 1 dated 10/13/2009 and here is a few shots from clear sky not good either since it black screen on me a few times and hard lock ups to.

anyone got any idea why this is going on? i have tried other drivers and i made sure i dont have the nvidia driver and physicX left installed either. since i no longer have the evga 285sc now. and do XFX have there own forum like EVGA does? if they do i can not find it.

and i have tried other drivers as well and this was in vista but that is now mess up due to other things but right now i will deal in win7 for now since the few games i do have are intact and full working order right now.

    any help would be appreciated

I posted this in the other thread:

My roommate and I both have XFX 5870s. Whenever I play risen I get a thin (1 pixel?) red or white line along the left and top edges of the screen when I play Risen. Same exact thing with my roommate. I didn't get those with my 8800GT either. That's the only time I've noticed anything out of the ordinary so I'll wait for newer drivers before I start worrying about it.

The two lines in each message are not the same issue. I don't know what the OP's issue is, but that "thin line along the left/top edge" has to do with some sort of Anti-aliasing being enabled, even if the game doesn't apply AA through the driver itself. Many games show that "line border" when AA is forced on through the driver. Usually putting AA on in the game itself doesn't cause this (with driver on application detected).

Those pictures always freak me out a little bit. Like the xfiles episode where the kids were fuzed into the rocks by the UFO.

If it doesn't happen in game with the windows driver, its obviously the ati driver. If it doesn't do it when using the DVI port, then maybe its just the HDMI driver being bad. Which connector are you using?

I've been having some line issues with my 5870 - but they're never on the main display. When I do anything 3D on the main display, I get moving horizontal lines on the secondary. Main is a Dell 2408WFP, secondary is a crappy old 15" I picked up for cheap. No problems with my old 4870X2.

I'd get in touch with XFX tech support, let them know you're having issues and try and troubleshoot - but at the moment I'd bet it's a driver issue.

Make sure to register your card with XFX. You can transfer the warranty when you sell anyways, no worries there. Yes they do have a forum there and their tech support is great IMO. I also have the XFX5870. I have not had any issues with lines and such though. ATI is really cranking out the drivers for these things, but to be sure I would check with XFX to see if they are seeing a similar issue.

well i use the dvi cable with my system from gfx card to Acer X223W 22" wide screen LCD

but yeah i did register the card the day i got like i all ways have done the EVGA card i have had in the last 6 yrs. so yeah i am a long time Nvidia fan here gone Rouge!!

but from what the ZFZ tech told me after i told him about the temp on the gpu. he said there is no way that could be no matter what i did with the fan speed on it.

i told him i turn the fan speed all the way down till it was like off and it did not hit 37C which was the hottest it got! vbut with out any driver installed it stayed at 60c the hole time and then i had no lines on the desk top at all and my desk top was not laggy at all either.

but i just sent it back to them since i did not want to wait for Newegg to get any back into stock. it would be much faster for XFX to fix/replace it for me over all anyways. so now i am using a borrowed EVGA 8800gtx till it comes back and i hope i have better luck then the 4 or 5rma i had with EVGA with the GTX 285 SC....

so i hope the add $50 more for this beast of a ATI card is worth the money then the 285 SC i just had..

beside when you compare the two side by side

Maybe an issue with the motherboard? Try the card on a different PC if possible.

right now i dont have a pci-e system that runs of my own. the 8800gtx that i am using.

its owner has been waiting for asus to send a striker 2 formula board that works to me.

since i have been pick to help him with it and so far it has had 2 issues with it. 1 it wont post or 2 it cooks!! while in bios in less then 5 minutes!!!

and today i just got off the phone with the lazy SOB since we have been waiting for 2 wks wondering why i havent received the 4th or 5th rma board, i lost count...

maybe once it gets back up and running i might try it but there is 1 thing that may not work.

it only has xp home on it that might be a slight set back. but anyways the 5870 is all ready on its way back to cali

I had a 9800pro back in the day that started doing artifacts exactly like that (different games of coarse.) For my situation though the fan had died and the card overheated damaging itself. I had to down-clock it to 9600pro settings for it to not throw artifacts on the screen. But the artifacts are almost identical to what you are seeing it's like 2 vertexes of a triangle are in the right spot then the 3rd is of in god knows where.

I have an xfx 5870 coming this week, wouldnt it be easier to RMA it with whoever you ordered it from than to send it in for repair?

i would have but at the time newegg was out and have been for some time. and who knows how long it would be till they got some more in. and the last time it took them all most 2 months to get some in and they lasted a few hrs before they where out of stock again.

that is why i put up the XFX tech support phone number but all so remember to register your card with them 1st. cause they need that before they can do anything else just like EVGA or any other company.

Your problems look like classic bad memory artifacts. I've had it happen to many a GPU over time.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

well the RMA card is now doing ok since after the new psu aka Corsair 850TX 850 watt and i just got a new mobo. a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P REV 1.6 bios F8

and since it has a set of dedicated sata ports for RAID i moved my seagate 250 drives to it and put Win7 64bit 7600 build on it. so now i have a fresh OS to play on. and i am still learning to over clock this yet and i am trying to get back to my 3.2ghz OC.

which i think i may have right now but i am typing on my server and going threw the bios on the main rig at the same time lol multi tasking at its finest !! rofl!

i do not understand why i have not received any email for replys for this threads when i have it set correctly . but i am glad i check it out while i was looking on more info on over clocking this mobo since this is the place to find out ya know

i am using the same voltages from my abit ip35 pro mobo for this and it seems to be working fine ut some are not on the mark as i like them to be but they are close enough ya know.like my MCH core i need 1.35 it has 1.34 so it good for me.

and the rest of the setting i have no clue so i leave them alone and leave them on auto and they seem to work since OCT v3.1.0 runs great for an 1hr just fine.

but before i got this mobo i was still having problems yet with this and i was about to rma this once again even XFX was about to. but i told them i thought it was a win7 problem since all my games that i have left and can play are in win7, no thanks to driver sweeper!!

well i will fill you in on what has been happing since i got the RMA gfx card now. when i was playing killing floor this would happen

and the pc would stop working but then after a few seconds it would come back and be ok.

and then there will be time when i will be playing other games like clear sky or sitting at my desk top i would get this

then the pc would be locked up tight and i would have to hit the reset button to get back into windows. but now after 3 days on a fresh install and playing even though i have not yet installed clear sky, its next on the list. i have not seen those screens and the pc has not locked up.

but i was not over clock either to the 3.2ghz as well like i am now which i will be the rest of the wk end but it is now time for some OCCT testing and so on. and all i want is 3.2ghz for a over clock for this cpu cause i need it to last me for a long time.

i learned my lesson on the abit mobo and the e6850 when i had it push to 4ghz and then 3.8ghz for the last 3 yrs. it seem every yr i had to increase the voltages a tad bit just to keep it stable so no more of that. well i am hoping that 3.2ghz is not that much for this Q9450 chip.

i will have some new pictures of the new mobo in my case some time soon once i get some new sata cables. i all so got another hard drive a WD 640gig the dual processor 32mb cache real sweet! i may remove the other raid0 that i have vista on and put it on that drive or just go all win7

since i now have a key for my win7 64bit now so it is a permanent thing now and not beta like lol. but over all i sure do like this 5870 though !! cod waw zombies never look this great!! it made my 285 sc look like crap !! i never knew that ATI would look like this before.

but at least now i have a mobo with pci-e slots that are 2.0 and not 1.0 lol maybe that had something to do with it? dont know but now it is done and the abit is sitting here and i have no spare parts for it. i kind of wish i had a cpu and ram and gfx card for it. cause my server is not doing to well these days lol.

old single core amd 4000+ 939 socket ddr400 system kind of tired of the mouse pointer skipping across the desk top ya know !!

and as far as aero i all ways turn that and desk top comp stuff off for games and make sure they run as admin
