DICE Says Dedicated Server Support is "A Given" in Battlefield titles

Earlier this morning, the executive producer for the Battlefield franchise tweaked Call of Duty over Infinity Ward ending dedicated server support, "confirming" that, yes, dedicated server support is "a given" in Battlefield titles.

"Dedicated servers FTW. What ever secures a better online experience is a given for us," Tweeted DICE's K.M. Troedsson.

Just in case people were a little worried Dice would go the same route as IW.

My main issue with BF2 dedicated servers was that fact that you had to spend a lot more $$$ just to run a EA ranked server. Many people back when BF2 was THE game, they wouldn't touch a server unless it was ranked. Alas, a funny jab at the whole IW bs.

    Kudo's to dice.

Looks like i ll be Getting Bad Company 2 for sure.. but for battlefield type games, dedi's are important, but not as much as in a S & D type scenario.

Heh the eyes of Dice probably lit up with the $ sign as soon as they saw IW essentially kill their PC market. They just became the new FPS king in the PC world and I look forward to BF1943 and BF:BC 2 on the PC next year. Here's to destructible 64 player action!

BF3 teaser next year Dice? Pretty please?

Now if only DICE wasn't owned by EA so that we could expect a good game from them.

BF2 has built in ranking system which gets people
obsessed with how many medals they got, and how high
they've advanced to the 4 star general.
The only way you can get "medals" and advance is by playing
on the "ranked" servers - which also happened to be "dedicated",in other words yes it is a given

i never thought about the whole server thing untill they said they were not supporting it.

it was always a given in the past.

with bf2 they also have to be a bf2 only box and they only gave out like 4 licensees to make ranked servers and none to companies with good non over stacked boxes.

i think that cod5 had the best with the log in and tracked stats and ranks/achievements but letting all stock ruled servers give points to it

There were plenty of dedicated non-ranked servers, but the % of people that played them made it hard to find a good full server 24/7 unlike ranked servers. It is pretty funny how so many people care about "medals, and ranks" as well as "achievements." Some medals and achievements can be fun to try to get, but to continue to play a game just for them is pretty common and pretty lame.

BF2 used the conceptual idea from MMOG with support classes, groups and communication between people in the same group, making it a fun game to play, socially on dedicated servers.

It simply owns anything produced in CoD series, big time.
or anything else for that matter in the fps arena.

Dice tried to add to this using it in the bf2142, but a lot of people dont need or want more achivements, they just wants more interaction and fun.

bf3 might be such a game.

I fear they will make bf3 feel like a cod game rather then bf1942/bf2.

i don't think medals and ranks are lame at all. that's what keeps people playing the game. all these small goals like reaching xxxx points to get a higher rank or to get expert badges will encourage people to play the game even if they already got 1000hours of playtime.

however, you guys are right about ranked/unranked servers. imo all dedicated servers with default gamemode settings should be ranked. to differentiate between ranked and unranked is just a ripoff to make more money, especially it's unfair towards smaller gameserver providers. just think about when bf2 was released and only very few, "handpicked" providers were granted to offer ranked servers (e.g. k-play in germany, especially as k-play is one of the most expensive gameserver provider here). fortunately they reconsidered that strategy later.

Hehe, I still have BF2 installed I play time to time. Still a great game. I never really got into Call of Duty for some reason.
Maybe cause I've been busy with MMOs...
I'll try out Bad Company 2 for sure. And BF3... or whatever proves to be better!
BF3 isn't going to be released any time soon, though.
BC2 doesn't really look worse than MW2 anyway. And it has more vehicles!
