This is my first play with 4GB on X48I know not to expect the same MHz as my 2x1GB kit but I still feel a bit wide of the mark

NB settings are fine
higher MHz= very fast loss of stability. Feels like a MHz limit, not latency- slacking off doesn't help. Higher voltage does nothing.
Kit is 2x2GB Ballistix PC10600/ 666MHz 6-6-6

you need help : bump the voltage up to 3 Volt, and take a good cooling system

Have you tried higher Vmch? Playing around with skews? (NB skew and Dram skew)
