We know 0 about it so far... Could as well be 2Gb version of 5870 with 1000 core clock...
Or they could rename 5870x2 that way, who knows...
Or it might actually never be released, or released in a year!
    Rumours, rumours...

I wonder how hard it is to give credit to original source. This was posted on Beyond 3D Forums already yesterday:

Wasn't there a HD 5870 X2 and HD 5850 X2 in the pipeline first? this could be this cards, simply namechange

Little bird which flew in from my window suggested that Hemlock would be called HD5900 series (so skipping X2 monickers this time?)

Ah, the ol rename game it is!
Radeon HD 5900 is most likely not a refresh or shrink, but Hemlock, and as you can see from the driver there will be two versions.
    Hemlock = 2x Cypress = 2x HD 5870/5850

    How about 5850x2 = 5950, and 5870x2 = 5970 ?

I always wondered why they didn't name the x2 cards like that.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

hahah was thinking the same thing

im sure we all know this situation, you ask somebody what graphics they have in their laptop or pc and the reply is "128mb, is that good?"

well 128mb is quite definitive actually, you can instantly say "no, it sucks"

If they said 512mb or 1gb, thats a different story

well 4870 X2 tells you what you're getting, if it was the 4970 then people wouldn't be as interested.

my guess is that R870 is a small revenue creator for AMD to give them a market lead while they sort out the R900 core to rival GT300.

From a marketing standpoint, it makes sense to name the hemlock setups as 59XX instead of 58XX x2. This is probably what these codenames will be used for too.

Thats right, at least according to nordichardware: Radeon HD 5970 confirmed as Hemlock

AMD just launched the Radeon HD 5700 series for the mid-range segment after launching the Radeon HD 5800 series for the performance users just a few weeks ago. We got word that the Radeon HD 5900 is being prepared for launch, but perhaps not for another couple of weeks, or even months, depending on how the development of Fermi goes over at NVIDIA.

As you perhaps remember back in April AMD brought in the slightly refreshed RV790-based Radeon HD 4890 to fight off NVIDIA's new high-end chips. The Radeon 5900 series will probably be somewhat of a deja-vu experience, where NVIDIA presents its news performer and AMD brings out the big guns.

    "ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series" = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_689C
    "ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series " = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_689D

Update: Radeon HD 5900 is most likely not a refresh or shrink, but Hemlock, and as you can see from the driver there will be two versions.

Update 2: Radeon HD 5970 confirmed as Hemlock, the second driver string is most likely Radeon HD 5950 shipping later on.
Althoug i think the second driver string is the 2GB version and the first string the 4GB version, just my 2 cents...

Makes no difference in games that can't take advantage of 2GB of memory. That "review" was badly flawed in test choice.
