So my GTX 275 is no longer made dam at least i could have had a warning so i could sell it off Seems the GT300/GF100 will/should save the day.

hmmm so nvidia is losing money per sold gtx260 gtx275 and gtx285 and thus limits the supply?

in his last story charlie wrote that he suspects its an artificial shortage nvidia created so people would hurry and buy up the current stock at the current price, before nvidia then drops the price of gt200 cards to adjust it to atis line up... cause if nobody buys the current gt200 stock off of retailers and parters at the current price, they will drop it, and thanks to nvidias price policies, nvidia will reimburse them for their losses... so basically every card that is sold 30$ below nvidias msrp, results in nvidia giving the partner 30$ credit for their next order. and the only thing they can do to prevent the prices from dropping is creating a shortage... less supply = better supply/demand ratio = higher price...

i think the latter makes a lot more sense than nvidia EOLing gt200... cause even IF gt300 comes out soon, what about the mainstream?
they NEED gt200 until they have cut down gt300 parts...

so my guess is they cut supply or limited it greatly, wait for stock to deplete, then they will relaunch gt200 at a notably lower price.

Who cares about GTX275/285?
They are destroyed by HD 58xx lineup. Partners are just shifting from Nvidia GTX2xx to the new ATI HD 5xxx.

People near retailers (me for example) have been noticing this for a long time. You couldn't buy a 285 or even 260 3 weeks ago... There are still 275 (ASUS) and 260 coming in, but i fear these will be the last ones.

This is true, GTX 285 is EOL. 260 and 275 should not be, at least not yet.

When i look at what price cuts nvidia should make for the GT200b to be competitive with the 5xxx series from ati, i don't think they want to make these price cuts. They would loose money because those are some pretty expensive gpus and performance wise they cannot compete.

They have to be eol them to bring to the table a more profitable gpu, maybe a die shrink? GT 200 in 40nm maybe? to compete with juniper?

Ironically, availability here in Canada and at least on Newegg in the US for the GTX 200-series isn't bad at all.

havent you noticed how the 260s dropped more and more in price way below 200$ but nvidia kept the 285 really high at 350$? same gpu, same pcb and heatsink in many cases even... and you dont really think nvidia sells gtx260s at a loss, do you? that means they made a NICE margin on 285 cards... and you think now that they have to cut their margins theyd rather give up and not sell anything at all instead of selling something for a big fat margin? come on...

nvidia has been selling 260s for below 175$ for a while, and thats what they sell real volume of...
so they must be making money on gt200 cards even if they sell them for 175$.
the only real price difference between a 260 and 285 is the gpu, and by now gt200 yields should be good enough to have mostly 285 parts.

now think about it, nvidia can probably sell 285 cards for below 200$ and still make some money off of them!
so why should they EOL gt200 when they dont have anything to replace it? and no, gt300 is NOT going to replace gt200, totally diferent perf and price positioning...

if they would just drop the price of the 285 to 250$ or even lower right now, then all cards that partners and shops have, which are still labeled 350$, would lose 100$ value and thanks to nvidias msrp strategy, nvidia would be forced to pay for this. theyd have to pay the card makers/shops the money back.

remember? if you, as an nvidia card maker/partner, dont underbid nvidias msrp, they will offer you price protection = if the msrp price of a card drops between a board partner buying a card from nvidia and selling it, nvidia will reimburse them the diference so they dont lose any money.

so first they need to get rid of the existing stock, before they can re-launch the cards at a notably lower price....

Theres quite a difference between one or two cards being EOL'd and the entire line up from 260 to 295 being cancelled.

Not to mention the fact that just because they're EOLing the GTX 200 series doesnt mean that they just wont relaunch the GTX 200 as GT 300 once the GTX 300 come out.

I think the strategy is quite simple. Stop GT200, clear it's stock, arrive with GT300 lineup in order to keep the market wheel spinning.

I don't know if November will be the month we actually see a decent GT300 lineup, it would be good for us all.
