    Gigabyte 4870 full-cover compatability?

Found a cheap Gigabyte 4870 1GB graphics card - GV-R487D5-1GD - and I'm hoping it's reference design or close enough to mount a full-cover block on it, preferably an EK.

Can anyone confirm the compatability of this card for a full-cover block? Or dash my hopes...

the only way to tell for sure is by taking the cooler off and looking at the pcb, yours doesn't look reference because usually reference have red pcb.

The GPU/RAM locations look identical to the reference design. I don't suppose the VRM area is, but there's already a separate heatsink there. EDIT: although, without the heatsink on, the VRM stuff there also looks identically placed to the version 1 reference design at http://www.ekwaterblocks.com/shop/me...versions_1.jpg - there's perhaps just a couple of caps and stuff different at the far edge of the board.

The EK 4870 blocks have the VRM part as a bolt-on extra, correct? So without that I could likely cool the GPU/RAM on its own without problems...

your best bet is to get a mcw60 with ram and vrm sinks rather than risk it with with full block and have something short or burn.

I think that might be the same card I have:

I used the MCW-60 for the 4870, but left the VRM (or whatever you call it) heatsink on. Works fine.

It's been a few months, so my memory is failing me, but recall doing a search for a full cover block at the time. I think I concluded that you can make the EK block work without the added piece, but I can't be sure. The advantage of the Swiftech heatsink is it can be changed to another block down the road. Performance is fine, although I generally prefer the look of the FC blocks.

Tnx for replies. Yes, that's the card. I'm not a mad graphics card upgrader (hence only just getting a 4870) so a full-cover is ideal for the forseeable future if I can squeeze it on. And single-slot too.
