Thumbs up TGE's Bench Report: MSI 790GX-G65 - unlocking and OC

    Test setup:
550 unlocked (will update with numbers - I was too anxious to bench)
MSI 790GX-G65 - thanks to MSI for testing use
Scythe Mugen II with Ultra Kaze and one Ultra Kaze over NB
new Kingston MGH-E Hyper HyperX 3x1GB kit
MSI GTX275 Lightning with OCP mod
    Good Vista 32-bit OS
    Silverstone Zeus 1200W
ASUS Xonar HDAV 1.3 Slim - in PCI slot no drivers
    PCI Poster
    WD 80GB IDE HDD
    other non essential hardware
setup on a end table on a mouser catalog - Keeping it very simple

I just wanted to show the easy way to unlock your cpus in the 790GX-G65

    1. go into cell menu

    2. select special EC Firmware or "unlock CPU core" in newer bioses

    2. Select Auto Advance Clock Calibration

The Result - Unlocked and ready to rock

    Its just that easy

OK I am just getting back to benching AMD after like 3 years so cut me some slack ... I got a mother board t test and decided to go with a 550 as it was the economical choice for me... I finally got the Mugen II on it and slapped a Ultra Kaze to a push setup through the Mugen - instead of my usual pull setup -

here is a start with a 1024m wprime at 300Mhz HTT - I will keep pushing it
now to edit my pics and update this post

Round 2, I think I have really topped out on air unless I do subzero air LOL

More Screenies, setup pics, and video to come... I just need some rest as I have been at this for 12 or so hours now

    - reserved for findings -

Some simple DICE results - once again on AMD DICE just doesn't cut it - need to get ln2 soon (and will)

Welcome back from the Dark Side....

I have to admit 300 HTRef is REALLY impressive, I like MSI and that seems like a potent board!

Running really high HTRef (or FSB for you Intel Converts) is not the best way to deal with AMD chips though.
You have unlocked Multis on your 550, you'll probably get better results by using them and keeping the HTRef clock for tweaking your RAM and IMC...

Running really high HTRef can cause problems with most boards.
Just out of curiosity try these settings (which will put you pretty close to the same settings) and check your results...

    HTRef @ 200
    CPU Multi @ 19.5x
    IMC Multi @ 12x
    Mem @ 1600 (800)

Just trying to help you get your feet wet now that your back on the right side of the Golden Pond....

Yeah I was just seeing how much pushing I could get away with on the setup LOL

I will be tweaking most likely from here on in and was using your recommended settings at the beginning before I wanted to explore HTT

Very nice results man! I'm sure alot of folks with locked Multis will be really happy seeing what you got... I know I'm Impressed with that HT clock!

Have fun Bud! Phenoms still get a bad rap, I LOVE my 550, but then again I'm an admitted AMD Fan...

Have fun, and keep us posted!

I effectively have topped out on air I believe and the board or chip seems to want higher HTT - I don't fully get what part is causing this but it doesn't like being under 240 HTT or so when I am really pushing it - weird I think...

    That would be BCLK .

Bclk - HTT (HTRef) (reference clock frequency)
FSB - QPI - HT Link (link between NB/IOH and CPU)
