Some help missing 2 cores here!!!

i just reinstalled my computer on a new case and just notice that on cpu id and real temp etc...

    i am missing cores...

on real temp it only shows 2 cores

and on cpu id i only have 2 core 4 threads?

    this is a 965 on a r2e...

vista task manager shows 4 windows should it be 8? in cpu usage history...

Perhaps try going into device manager and uninstalling the processor devices, then rebooting. I know it worked for 775 chips under certain circumstances, but it may not be the same for i7.

    What does CPU-z show?

    Are you overclocked?

(Apologies, I see you got the same in CPUId/realtemp)

Re-seat the cpu, could not all pins are making contact. Be sure you have no bent-pins; also up vtt and vnb a notch - that could make the difference. Is the system overclocked?

Wait before dismantling your system. I read of it happening to someone, but don't remember where... What OS are you using? That someone was using Vista and was missing 2 cores, but when booted into XP all 4 core were there. It was OS issue. Reinstalling solved it.

If bios says all 4 cores, then check OS next. Run, msconfig>>boot>>advanced options>>toggle processor box and select 8 and then OK. If no option to select 8, only 4 then sometimes can detect HAL, restart and then select 8. But if only 2 shows in bios, then bios issue or need try and reseat cpu.

if i turn ht on it shows only 2 cores 4 treads....

weird..i will remount cpu for the heck of it, and will reinstall vista 64 just to see...
    whats vnb?

systems is running stock right now...

system was oced to 4.2 since 965 came out...on a re2...and it didnt have that problems, i dont really know when it happened? however i cleared the cmos, unistalled the cpu on vista 64... weird thing it shows 8 cpus on vista....

bios tells me that i can use ALL CORES, 1, 2 ....no more options so 0 and 3 are not showing? or 3 and 4...

its weird, let me get some screens so i can show you guys...as soon as i get out of work...

Go start -> Run -> msconfig -> boot tab -> advanced options -> tick Detect HAL.

Apply and restart. Should fix the issue

+1. This happened to me with Vista and I did a clean install and the problem was corrected.

Yep, I would try reinstalling OS first at this point.

But, I could not tell from your post, if any of the cores are missing or greyed out in bios. Gigabyte bios shows All, 1, 2, 3 (ie all is 4 core option). But if cores missing in bios, then likely going to be mobo socket issue or mobo socket/cpu contact issue, less likely bios problem, but could try updating or reflashing same bios. If reinstalling OS does not work, may want to ask someone with same mobo with any i7, what should be shown in bios with all cores working.
