    New System......X58 or P55?

Hi all, I know another X58 or P55 thread. I'm desperate to build myself a new system as most of my current hardware is sold and I'm using an old Northwood Pentium 3.2Ghz I'm looking to buy either a new P55 system or go with the older X58, but it's so close with the review results and now where hearing that the x8/x8 when using crossfire/SLI on a P55 system is not that far behind the older X58 systems.

I was about to order my new system a few weeks back, but held off when I read about the new i5/i7 and the brand new P55 boards. Thats where my problems started I'm even more confused as to which way to go and I need to decided ASAP.

I'm mainly a gamer, but I do use photoshop a lot. I'm looking to buy either an ATI 5870 or an ATI 5850 and in the near future buy a second card and crossfire them. I will be needing the following items for my build. Motherboard, CPU, Memory and PSU.

    X58 Build
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 or Asus P6TD Deluxe
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ)
Memory: No idea what I need, but would like to be able to hit 2000Mhz preferably something Overclockers stock, but thats not set in concrete.
PSU: Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 850W or Corsair HX 850W or Corsair HX 1000W

    P55 Build
Motherboard: Asus Maximus III Formula or Gigabyte GA-P55-UD6
    CPU: Intel Core i7 860 2.80Ghz (Nehalem)
Memory: No idea what I need, but would like to be able to hit 2000Mhz
PSU: Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 850W or Corsair HX 850W or Corsair HX 1000W
    Asus RIVE | Intel Core i7-3960X | Prolimatech Megahalems |Corsair AX860i | Cosmos S | Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum | Windows 7 Ultimate 64 | 16GB Corsair Dominator GT | Samsung S27A950D | ASUS Xonar D2X | Samsung 256GB SSD 840 PRO |

P55 is the new budget/mainstream platform, so if money is not an issue, go x58 (enthusiast platform), especially since you're looking to add another graphics card in the near future.

you dont need extra fast ram on the 1366 they are saturated on 2 channels with something like cas8 1600 and i would recomend the tri channel 1600 c7 (it gives u wiggle room on strange speeds). i would personally go for the p55 with a lower MB (and i dont like asus or gigabyte) like a dfi or evga non classified if that will get u the better gpu. if u can get a 1366 and a 5870 then i would go for a 920 and a dfi t3he8. the p55 should oc better at lower watt and has less IO latency but the x58 will support the i9 latter

I would hazard a guess and say there's no noticeable performance between the two. I went 1366 simply because it was cheaper than P55 at the time (couple of weeks ago).

Yes, any dual gpu solution will suffer on the p55, also if you use anything in the second pcie you will be restricted to x8 bandwidth. There are also no future chips designed for that socket

With your current system, you're not missing anything. But if you wish, get the x58 or wait until P55 motherboards to drop in prices.

All systems sold. Will be back after Sandy Bridge!

    X58 isn't dead, and it won't be until 2011 or 2012.

Well, who need 6 core anyway ? there is NO games that support just yet even Quad !!! so you can get 6 core if you want, Most games support only one or two cores that is all.

yeah, right, who needs ABS, ESP, ASR in cars?! to hell with internal combustion engines, let's use chariots with horses!

I have Abit NF7/Barton combo still working, so I could install W7 on it and play Crysis, right?

On topic: +1 for X58, for OBVIOUS reasons.

C'mon man i was just kidding.
I am a passionate gamer, but I use my rig for benching, folding, etc.
But, just for the heck of it, I'll try Assassin's creed on one or more cores, cause it is multi-core aware IIRC.

as far as RAM goes the G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-2000 CL9 2GB x2 or trident variant are VERY nice for the price. check them out in the bandwith section - a lot of people are getting great results. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=233620

Until I do some testing, here is an interesting thread about multi-core game performance.

it sounds like ram on the P55 boards are limited to 1.65V. I saw a review on Newegg were someone got some higher voltage ram for his P55 and didn't have very good results.

Who needs 6 cores? Who needs 2 or more GPUs? I mean seriously you are at the wrong website to ask this kind of question.

P55 is a good way to go if you are limited on funds and do not upgrade often.
X58 is the way to go if you want to be able to support future Intel CPUs and have multiple GPUs. While the games may of just been a few FPS apart not everyone uses a computer for gaming.

I chose P55 over X58 because Core i7 860 does sound quite appealing. I like how it draws less power than the 920 and its slightly faster. And if you enable turbo mode on the i7 860 it will run at 3.4Ghz maximum on load which is another nice bonus. FTW

And as for getting 8x/8x on SLI or Crossfire, doesn't really bother me. All you will lose is at least 2-5FPS which is nothing.

With your current system I don't see why you go with the half-assed P55, take a X58

Get the x58... I bought a i5 750 with a ASUS entry P55 the mobo was not very good also i5 750 does not overclock like the i7 920 D0 does. I have ordered a Asus Maximus III Formula to ensure i get good mobo without defects.

But till now the i5+P55 strikes me as a so so platform "Same is the case with say 955+790x" The i7+x58 is the one you should get because i5 750 + Asus Maximus III Formula is not as cheap as i wanted to go. IMO even low end mATX X58 mobos are better than mid end P55's

I got an offer I couldn't refuse and had in my mind it was X58 all the way hadn't heard of the new P55 platform and the i5/i7 CPU's doh! I like the power savings of the newer P55, but at the same time just wished it gave you full x16 lanes when using crossfire/SLI
