my pics...Amazon refunded me $40 in different from the price drop.

I'm a complete n00b at this, but right now, I'm blown away what this tiny DSLR can do...I'm still waiting for someone to let me borrow their telephoto lens.

    I guess it's a nice starter camera

If that's the version that he has, it won't autofocus with the D3000, just something to keep in mind. You need the AF-S for that.

I'm surprised the D3000 doesn't have auto focus built in.. it uses the same components as the D90.

But that's true, if the D3000 doesn't have auto focus built in then you'll be manually focusing that beautiful lens.

@elite22, that 80-200mm f/2.8 is worth about $1100 in excellent condition. it's Nikon's 2nd best telephoto zoom. Next to the 70-200mm f/2.8. Which some people will even debate that the 80-200mm f/2.8 is better. The 80-200 does not have AF built in, and does not have VR. However, it's lighter and smaller than the 70-200mm.

manual focus in fine with me (thanks for the history btw)
i am kind of thinking with stepping up to the d5000 now any thought vs. the D3000???
what are the main benefits with the D5000 other then the hd movie and live view, which i dont think im really going to use anyway, is it worth my extra money???

D5000 still does not have an autofocus motor.

Because you already had the 80-200mm, I think you should definitely have autofocus. Buying a used D70, D80 will serve your needs while saving your bank, you don't have to worry about buying lenses since you already have a nice one

I agree, go with a used D70 or D80. The D90 is the first current generation camera (first meaning the cheapest) that offers an autofocus motor, and is still a little more expensive than the D5000. The thing that you have to understand is that you are in possession of a Nkon 80-200mm F2.8 ED, one of the greatest lenses ever made by Nikon. Restricting it to manual focus would be extremely wasteful in my opinion. I very well understand that you're on a budget and all, but you have to see the bigger picture. Using the lens with a 'lesser' quality body wouldn't let it show its potential.

    Either a new D90 or a used D70 or D80.

is not same D3000 autofocus discussion????

11-point AF system with Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus sensor module

Employing 11-point autofocus driven by Nikon's Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus sensor module, the D3000 delivers fast, precise focus over a wide area of the frame. Four versatile AF modes are available: single-point AF for stationary subjects, especially ones that are off-center; dynamic-area AF for moving subjects; auto-area AF when you want the D3000 to automatically determine the proper focus method; and 3D-tracking (11 points) AF for maintaining focus on subjects even if the composition changes.

    D3000 lens compatibility chart

good thing I didn't actually outbid [XC] itznfb then

please clarify, I'm confused about this autofocus then

The D3000 has the same autofocus system as the D90, the 11-point one. Still, it doesn't have it's own autofocus motor with which it can autofocus a lens without its own motor. I'm no expert when it comes to the technical aspects of photography, but I would say the 11-point autofocus is a software feature whilst the autofocus motor is a hardware feature. Hence, the D3000 has similar software to the D90, but less advanced hardware / missing features. Of course, I could be talking crap right now, somebody stop me before it's too late.

The D200 is an excellent camera. In terms of image quality, the newer generation of SLRs, such as the D90 and D300 are said to be superior. You may also find that 10.2 Megapixels is not enough if you intend to print in large formats. However, the D200 has a weather sealed body and will likely last many years, has the same 11-point autofocus system as, for example, a D90 or a D3000, has many on-camera controls, meaning that you won't have to open up menus to change settings because you'll have buttons on the camera itself, and it of course has an autofocus motor. Some people also find the size of the camera to be a lot more comfortable to hold than, say, a D40 or a D60, which are quite small to hold in one's hand.

Good job, that's a hell of a first camera. I think it's great when people go out and get a proper first camera that they won't be disappointed with, rather than some beginner SLR that won't make much difference to what they used to own. Not that I have anything against cheaper SLRs such as a Nikon D40, perhaps I am referring to 'bridge' cameras.

The thing is with a D40/60/5000 a technical person will generally grow out of these pretty quickly. A D200 or newer you will never grow out of and it's actually much easier to learn anyway.
