    Core i7 860 for a Newbie -- Make Sense?

    Hello Fellow OC-ers,

I am thinking about a completely new rig (cannibalizing some parts from my existing machine), and centering the new build around the core i7 860, only because I don't want to spend as much on the 870 (this will be my first foray into the core i7 world).

My goal is to play games, but use HT for the occasional Blu-Ray ripping. So, I am thinking of a mild overclock to 3.3 or 3.4GHz, with Turbo enabled so when certain games call for a single core, I can boost up to 4GHz.

    Does that make sense?

Also, I love Xigmatek coolers. Does anyone know if the brackets for the 1156 are available yet? And if so, where?

    Thanks in advance
    Current Gaming Rig:
    • Intel Core i7 860 @ 3.6GHz (22x165, 33C idle, 69C load)
    • Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R
    • G.Skill 8GB RipJaws DDR3-1333
    • Diamond ATI 5870
    • CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W
    • Plextor Black 24x DVD Black w/ LightScribe
    • LG CH10LS20 Blu-Ray Reader
    • Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Someone correct me if im wrong but ripping blu rays(from drive to desktop) is more dependent on blu ray drive speed as long as the cpu isnt too old. i myself went with a i7 860.

Cool, and how do you like the 860? How much did you overclock it? What voltage did you need? What heatsink cooler did you use? And how is it working?

Sorry for the onslaught of questions

If you get an EVGA P55 board you won't need a 1156 bracket, it comes with 775 mounting holes

As for me I have a EVGA p55-SLI and mine overclocked to 4.2 @ 1.39v and stock cooler. Although I didn't leave stock on there for long, I had a v8 which worked fine but now my v10 is on it.

Can you tell me what this means on the EVGA P55 SLI blurb at Newegg:
    "XSLI+Phy, 3X BIOS, 12+2 PWM up to 1189KHz, DDR3 2600MHz+"

Particularly, what does the "12+2 PWM up to 1189KHz" mean?
compared to the cheaper model that says:
    "6+1 PWM to 447KHz" ???

I want to know if getting the SLI version is a total waste of money if I plan to use just one GPU? (which I do)

    Thanks a lot!
