So,how much faster is this card when you compare it to a 8800Ultra??I only see comparison charts with a 285/295 or 4870's....
thats caue 8800 ultra is 2 generations old... it'd be like comparing an x800 to a 2900. its around the speed of a 9800gtx, a bit faster, so like 3/5 of a gtx 260?

So tempted on that sapphire card. SO tempted. I'm going to hold out for an XFX though, I want that lifetime warranty.

Yeah, I was going to also, but I realized that the XFX cards will probably cost about 10% more, and may not be out for another week or two.
OTOH They may be in stock in 2 hrs, but my gut tells me no.
I plan on upgrading to either a 2Gb 5870 or 5890 well within the warranty on the Sapphire, so I went ahead and ordered one.

Just watched them hit backorder status, literally right before my eyes. I refreshed the page after about 3 minutes, and it went to "auto notify" at Newegg.

I couldn't call those as overkill for 1920x1200. There are many times where I wish my 4870x2 had more juice at this resolution. The 5870x2 and GT300 should allow for higher IQ at this resolution and or higher performance.
It really depends what games you play, what kind of IQ settings you would like to be able to play with, your budget, power supply, case and finally your personal definition of acceptable performance. All these things should be considered before making any judgments.
Now I'm not saying a single 5870 would be a slouch at 1920x1200 but for me It would fail to impress given I've been using an X2 for the last year. I'd have to say it partly depends on where you are coming from as well. Someone upgrading a system that is a few year old will obviously be blown away where as someone who upgrades generation to generation won't be ( not nearly as much at least )
My personal advice would be that for 1680x1050 or lower, a single 5870 will do fine for the next 12 months ( this including current and upcoming titles ) However if you intend to run everything at 1920x1200+ with high IQ / settings, your likely looking at crossfire / SLI. Using the GTX 280 / 4870 as historic evidence, I think this is a fair assumption ( being that there are games out now that I feel don't run well enough on a single 280 / 4870 at 1920x1200)

I'm going from a 8800GS will i see a performance increase?

I'm assuming your joking right?
If not, you obviously will given you will be running at a modest resolution and have the system and cpu to back it up ( eg decently clocked Core 2 / Phenom II or better )
