Question Anyone crunching with LGA1156 i7's yet??

Just wondering what the concensus is as these are popping up in local stores and work out abit cheaper than LGA1366 setups $650AUD(i7-860) compared to $750AUD (i7-920)

I think I might wait for the prices to settle first just wondering if anyone was crunching with it already (LGA1156)?

I have read that they are slightly lower power consumption so thats a plus for crunchers right?!

Wow, they're hitting shelves over here already? I thought they weren't due out for another 2-3 months.

Just checking some prices over here, and they aren't a whole lot cheaper. An i5 750 (2.66 Ghz) is about AU$350 and an i7 860 (2.8 GHz) is AU$450, while an i7 920 is AU$400. Although boards are about AU$100-ish cheaper. I wonder how they perform clock-for-clock compared to an i7 920.

Also, I haven't been following them much, how do they clock on some of the cheaper P55 boards? Are they still able to hit 4.0 Ghz or there abouts under mid-range water?

From what I've read , the boards are better for RAM clocking .
    2200Mhz and such .

There are a few places reporting CPUs and some boards in stock. If I had a spare grand, I'd probably place an order on one

i5's are only 4 threads or 4 cores ie no HT so not as much bang for buck compared to i7 in terms of crunching.

But if you can save $100 on an i7 by going P55 then thats a win in my book. I love 8 threads! one day I'll get a dual socket board but till then this will do until the 6 core CPUs come out anyway!

Are you sure all the i5's don't have Hyperthreading? I've heard conflicting reports as to which chips have HT and which don't.

And while the boards are AU$100 or so cheaper, the CPUs are AU$50 or so more But then again, give 'em a month to settle down, and the prices on both will probably drop. If I can hit 4.0 Ghz (or there abouts) under water on an ~AU$200 board, I'll definitely be grabbing a Lynnfiend/P55 instead of Bloomfield/X58, since I don't really need tri-channel RAM or x16/x16 Crossfire/SLI.

Any LGA1156 CPU that has HT should be 100% equal to an i7 920 at identical clock rates, as far as crunching is concerned.

well one of the reasons HT is not on core 2 is because memory bandwidth. p55 will have one less channel and will be a little slower. this will become more noticeable with 8 threads and when we get to 32nm even more so.

i920 crunches WCG the same whether 2channel or 3channel.RAM speed and latencies have very little impact.CPU speed is all that counts at WCG.

    Exactly.

Both my 920 crunchers run with 2x2GB, so only in DC mode. No performance hits whatsoever.

Back when RAM was expensive, I was a fan of going single channel and taking the 1% hit in crunching performance just to save some upfront $$$$.

Clock-for-clock, all i7s will be the same for crunchers....so P55+i7 will be a good buy for many here

My 14 Q's each run with 1x 1024.I'll put their PPD against any other running the same clock.

Well it's good to hear that they will be a good buy as I just sold a couple of Q6600 setups and will replace them with one of these. I'm guessing the sweet spot it the i7 860 as the 870 is 1.5 times the pricee over here in Oz. I'll need to go for a search and see if there are any results on them that give 4GHz like my i7 920.

Besides having 8 threads means I can have half the PCs right or does it mean the same but MOAR CORES

South of the equator mate! I'm just coming out of winter heading into summer. I have a plan to stealthily increase my PPD so as not to arouse suspision adding 5 Quads in the space of a few weeks was not a good move! The wife was all over it. Now I am downsizing so I can upsize to i7s lol

Just an FYI. A bunch of P55/Socket 1156 boards are now available at eWiz. No CPU's though.

so what did you buy? I still think for the price the I7-920 is a better deal, but I may be missing something
Maybe sometime down the road 1156 would be a better buy. by the time you get decent mobo and cpu, prices are damn near the same

For the prices of the chips alone, the 920 is the better buy. If you're building from scratch and factor in the boards and ram, though, LGA1156 looks to be the better buy.

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

i7-860 totally owns i7-920 in power consumption:

Even if the rig was a bit more expensive (which it isn't), it would be worth it in the long run.
