probably because it is a deneb would be my guess. being clocked at 2.8Ghz puts it at the same speed, perhaps its a X4 920 with a ddr3 controller, just speculation on my part. I also believe there is a X4 925 clocked at 2.8Ghz that is only sold in oem. So either propus is a little behind and they needed a way to get the Athlon II quads out or maybe they have extra stock of something and just wanted to git rid of it because maybe there was issues on the cache that didn't meet the spec they wanted.

Also some of the Quad Athlon II quads being deneb answer why the tdp probably went up from the 65W to 95W. At least thats my guess. But most of this all is speculation on my part. It is weird that they would ship Athlon II quads that where deneb though because I would think that would be a more expensive thing for AMD to do then the L3 less Propus.

Guys, that isnt a real Athlon II (Propus) CPU but a Phenom II (Deneb) one. Id love to see some real Athlon II X4 tests

Thank you, w0mbat, the time vested in getting early access to a new chip and testing it, fully deserves this kind of appreciation.

Even if it isn't real, the performance without L3 cache will be on par with the real deal.

the cinebench says it all. no L3 gets 3.36x for multi, with L3 gets 3.65x

If that would be the case then what are the photos/screenshots/validation of the above of? A deneb? I don't think so.
I'm only amazed that some people can dismiss an info so quickly, even if it would be laid in their hands.
If you claim it isn't real, how about some arguments to that?

We all very much appreciate your time and results. But you have to understand that what you have actually IS a Deneb core re-branded as Athlon II X4. There will be real Propus based Athlon X4s with no L3 on-board in Q4.

Hey, i like that u posted ur benches here and that u put effort in this thing, u got a Athlon II X4 620 and its nice to know how this chip will perform.

BUT what u got is "just" a Deneb die wirh disabled L3 cache thats labled as Athlon II. If u had a real Athlon II aka Propus u wouldnt be able to unlock any L3 cache cause on the Propus die there is no L3 cache at all.

Of cause its very likely that both, Propus & Denbe w/o L3, will perform the same and so ur perview gives a good performance look at the upcoming Propus core.

But that doesnt make ur Deneb a Propus. Understand?

it's is a disable deneb and they're reusing over stock or or just bad cache chips.
the resistance from non active silicon can be a down side.
If they're doing that the must be on the verge of a new cpu or shrink to no waste time and extra chips.
I can't see a real point for wasting time on making a propus die wafers.

Propus is much, much smaller than Deneb (yes, the L3 cache takes a hughe space on the die) and thus much cheaper to produces.

This, we can't be sure about. If anything, it'd probably be a twin-die Athlon II X2, and we know that an Athlon II X2 is not the equivalent of a Phenom II X2.

you missed my point though, why waste time on making that when you have something better coming earlier.

If there is a propus I hope they come below $140 mark.

No it is a Deneb die with L3 disabled. The End.

Athlon II x2 has 1024kb L2/core, Athlon II x4 will have 512kb/core and the performance will be onpar with this.

    +1

Why would they introduce another die ? At first i actually thought these were going to be 2 Regors in MCM ,apparently not. I don't think cheaper quads are going to benefit AMD , they need to get it on with the shrink .

    Thanks for comparison OP .

I didn't have much time for overclocking or performance tests because we were mainly after on thing:
    http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=661740
    And we did it
The L3 was unlocked via ACC in the bios
Now i'm trying to convince him to give me some time (a few hours.. ok maybe half a day..) to perform more tests on that sweet chip..
Really appreciate the post Chinook, but I hope that when this chip is officially released it's the new die without L3 cache. It should be energy efficient, cheap, able to process 4 threads simultaneously, and OC very decently. Thanks again!

Indeed you guys are right, it is a Deneb and not the real Propus . A L3 disabled deneb. I still have a feeling that the first wave will be like this unless they have the new die ready by late september when it will launch. From what i know, recommended price point for this chip will be just above 100$.

Yup i did a google search and found several sites reffering to this article.
