That sure is a nice spare Deneb. My 940 can't even open Notepad at 4.1GHz.

sweet cpu.......but your benches clocks went lower as you continued. Is it capable of benching at 4ghz at all? did you try?? Im thinking of one of these for a second system. or just use this one and get myself the newer 965 c3.

It's particularly stable at 3.83 GHz, but @3.7 GHz it is LinX stable.

That sample can run few singlethraded benchmarks @4 GHz. Overclock stability is slightly lower than good Phenom II X4 sample, but
unlocked L3 cache is absolutely stable. With, or without L3 cache, that Phenom II err. Athlon II overclocks equally.

I like it, $99 bucks at newegg. Are you sure you need that much voltage for 3.8ghz? Usually 1.47-1.5v is good for that speed.

Yeaah, I know that, but that baby is pretty power hungry..... With lower voltage it's unstable....

Im curious? Did you try 3.8 ghz at 1.5v with NB and HT at stock? (around 2.2-2.4ghz)

I will try tomorrow. You will see the difference between L3 on and L3 off, and also power dissipation and stability.

cool, try it out, see what happens? Its just bothering me you need to use so much voltage Id like to see you hitting 4ghz-4.1ghz at those voltages.

Unless this is just the way it works with these cpu's they are just not as efficient as they could have been as Phenoms so they just used for lower speeds?

Can you give a guy a little advice as to make the 6mb usable. I turned on ACC and set HT to 1.6. The system will boot and show the 6mb L3 in the bios, but when it goes to the screen where it should load windows I get nothing. Raising CPU voltage does nothing. Any advice would be great.

Try for example Hiren's boot CD and use some staility check tools, but I think the L3 is bad and for that reason it was disabled. Bad luck...

You may have luck to successifully unlock L3. But there is some tricks to make it usable. Raise voltage @ NB/L3, and lower the speed of NB/L3. Also try to manually set up ACC.

It is a low leakage CPU.... TDP @2.6 GHz with cool'n'quiet enabled - idle:

    cool'n'quiet disabled:

max load is lower than claimed 95W:

with unlocked L3 it has slightly higher TDP

idle with cool'n'quiet disabled, and L3 unlocked:

    load with L3 unlocked:

@3.6 GHz CPU power is little bit higher than 140W:

if only one thread is loaded CPU power isn't higher than 70W:

From the CPU-Z Validation I see you're doing this with a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P and in a previous post you said it's on air.

What I'd like you to explain is how this is done or is there a howto somewhere. This is my first foray back into the AMD world. I've got an AMD Athlon II X4 630 Processor but not my motherboard. My current plan is to get a Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P. I didn't get my 630 in the hope of unlocking it so this would be an extra bonus if it happens.

I just came across this article...

Some Athlon II X4 are ''Deneb'' based, unlockable

and it refers to this article on how to unlock ...

AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition unlocking & overclocking

I still need to put my system together so I haven't tried it yet.

And I'll second felix and ask can we tell if the cpu we have can be unlocked before trying to unlock it?

Nice 620 chip you got there drfedja , what is the batch if it's not a secret? It really outperforms Propus core without L3 cache, in overclocking and in clock per clock comparison

msgclb, unfortunately Deneb based Athlon X4 cpu's are very rare , better chance in finding 550 X2@X4 for the same money and they are BE with unlocked multiplier, but since you already bought 630, good luck with L3 unlocking

I can't tell you now about the batch, but this is the AACYC mask and it is 23 week 2009.
That sample is slightly better overclocker than standard cacheless Propus core.

It is LinX stable with VCORE @1.488V and NB Voltage @1.34V

I would think that these would overclock to higher clocks if you got the cacheless core: The deneb ones are out of a really low bin and the propus-cored examples are the highest bin for their die. The only way I can think that that wouldn't be true is if the propus dies are tuned slightly different than the denebs, which may or may not be true. The propus chips also generally tend to be later production batches and would benefit from 10 or so additional weeks of process tuning at AMD.

A deneb running at 3.6 would definately be faster than a propus at 3.7-3.8 though, so I doubt the propus chips could compete with the deneb ones, higher clocks and all.
