Acrylic, cubic-like Small case: The DarkBox project. New pics 18/Oct

    Hello there, fellow modders.

This project will be my first deep diving in casemod, I've done some "here and there" little things, but not that it could be called MOD.

After some problems and hard times getting my monster-heavy case to LAN parties, I decided to make something smaller, lighter, easier to carry, but beatiful and complete as I think it should be.

So, it came down to the Darkbox Project, being it some sort of cube, made with aluminum frame and acrylic panels, covered with windowfilm and screwed to the ALU frame. Simple, but light and classy ( I hope, ehehheh) It wil be made to Micro ATX boards, but it will fit even a dual rad (WC) on the back, while the top panel will be completely free to future cuts for more WC rads....

Some scketches..... (remember, they are just scketches...) of the early idea I had....
Don't mind the colors used, at first the frame would be made of wood, but people suggested me to change it for the weight issue....

I modified some parts of it, changed the frame idea to ALU, and increased a little inches in the measurements... While trying to keep the "case" the smaller I could make it.
    This would be its size....

Here, I was melting my brain to figure HOW to fit the two "U" shaped parts of the case... HOW would be the sliding-down mechanism I would have to use....

So, I thinked that "L" thick corners, with deep cut in the midlle, would do it... in the RED areas of the model

A newer scketch, of the concept with little improved ideas.

Here is the "real deal". this is how it will look when the acrylic panels arrive by mail....
And the measurements, that in fact i already changed due to internal space....

And the issue of internal space that I said above....
260mm of width for 240mm of fans.... I'd need to cut the frame in the front....

    Wish me luck!

@miptzi, you sure you dont want to put a psu bracket too? cause in your sketches it looks like the psus about to fall.

    Processor: AMD Phenom X4 9750 @ 2.8 GHz
    Video Card: XFX GTX 260 @ Core: 754 Shader:1531 Memory: 1211 PSU : Zalman ZM850-HP Motherboard: Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P

    PICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Hallelujah

The crystal joy, nice packed ......

    .....and detail of its corner

The corner, garage or wathever.... organized MESS!!

Part of the "toolset" : cheap 'n good stuff bro!

Detail for the dremel kit got it for 9 U$ !!!!!!!Way cheaper than expected

More tool on the sink top.... ( yes, its all dry)

close on 2º dremel kit and the hard duty cutter...ehehehheh

    two "cherrys" on the kits
This little saw cuts trough wood and acrylic lke butter on the sun....

The tittle drill is really good for tiny holes, its mega-narrow tip ( point) is great for starting precise holes...

Digital caliper, always good to have around...

The good old Iron clamp ( whatever you call it), holding stuff........

Finishing it, the tool box on the ground

Rugged hoses, different size and colors, for some crazy ideas....

And the corner/bracket that will make the frame....

Lets get to work, shall we?
Cutting an old mobo tray, and making the 7 slots go 4-way, ehehehehehe

    Update....

    preparing the panels to surgery

Mummified acrylic , and the necessary googles

    Almost at it.....

    And already done!

Meanwhile, I've drilled n' cutted my old table with the jigsaw, making its way for future cuttings.

And tested the screws that will hold the fans on the case.... perfect...

    CANT STOP MODDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    MOARRRRRRRR

Drawing he next cuts, mobo shield....

    after cutting...

After some detalis taken with a little drill, the inside and outside...

    Back to the front:
After the previous "screw testing", the real deal: both sides of the matched fans. Fits perfectly...

And back to the back :rotfl: , more fans holes.....

Some tests with the back of the case. All fits nice... Just some adjustments on the PSU hole, for different power plugs...

The second PIC shows me the idea of using the case laying on its side....

A little work at night, before the neighbours call the cops for the noise. It's 9:00 PM

Hole for the backplate ,fo Waterblock.....
A quick pencil on the tape, and a simple square around...

Some improvementes on the PSU hole, removed the fan divisor in the front, was flimsy.
And then, a little sanding in the cuts....

    This week shop cart...
    100 rivets, 6mm
White L-beams, lots of it. Powdercoated. Replacement for the old ones,
Old L-beams, and the new tools for the set. Includes a 45º triangle, bood for corners.
the Allen Screws, all case will use allen screws
    and some landscape shot

after a hole lifetime...... back to business

As the borrowed cam decided to work today too, the shots i took early are after the bendings and fixing the frame.... no shots of the development, sorry.....

look how the corners are bent, not cutted ... hard do bend without breaking the powdercoat...

and a preview of the case, with front and back, and mobo tray.

man, all was going fine..... until now....

    Update.....

    Screw testing, 8mm lenght for 3mm acrilyc+ 2.2mm aliminum....

drilling the screwholes...... both on the front panel and internal frame

Now testing the brand new holes..... fits perfectly

    detail of the fixing mechanism

afterwards, some adjustments on the frame, for the wider mobo shiled.... now it fits

    and.....

    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

the acrilyc snaped on the two LAST HOLES>>>>

When the first happened , i tought " could be worse"

Then the second one, worse as i asked for.....

the drill is so strong ( 810w) the when it jammed on the frame, the twist of the drillpoint almost went straight.....

    final story

    LOTS of anger
wanna destroy the world and put everything on the trash can.......

yeah, I should have looked on the "acrilyc properties" before starting. Blame me....

But while, now itsso early here, the neighbours will call the cops if I start drilling....

so, lets do some other stuff....

the waterblock can fit 1156, 1366 and 775 from Intel, so it will stay with me a while...
The japanese characters need some "touch" so the ghetto awake in me.....

something I've done today, busy weekenda and few improvements.....

specific cutting on the superior external L-beams, to make the top "slide" down...

    Ending the external L-beams....
Great improvement on the looks. Much better than plain panels screwed on the frame....

    sure....
the size has changed during the assemble. The thickness of the panels, plus the double L-beams.....

    something like this:
