OMFG LOOK AT THIS CRUNCHING BEAST Discuss And Dave try to keep yourself under control and I apologise if this old news, oh well, I'm too lazy to search. What kind of PPD rates could we expect from this. Francois and I are both getting one, are you?

    let's say 22k /8 cores.

    22k x 16 = 352k / day

24 megs of cache?that sounds like a strange number. that thing almost has as much cores as win7 supports wonder how much a server os handles.

Well win7 can only use 2 cpu socket as well every other desktop windowses. Datacenter editions of windows server 2008 and 2003 should be able to use up to 64 sockets.
Ofc every linux distro will almoust natively support up to infinite number of sockets, well it's not limited anyways...

Do want! Hmm how much do you think a system like that would cost? $8k? More?

    8k.. per CPU
    More like 40-50k for a fully outfitted 8x8 Nehalem-EX.

I'm assuming the 128 thread system will be prohibitively expensive. So let's see a 64-thread 4P system that will be widely available:

    $2,000 per CPU x 4 = $8,000 for CPUs
    $1,000 Mobo (4P)
    $2000 for Rest Of Components

    You're looking at a minimum price tag of $11,000 for 64 threads (32 real cores). If 8 threads accomplish 22K/day, then (64 Threads/8Threads)*22/day = 176K/day, then that brings the PPD/$ to 16PPD/$.

A barebone i7 rig costing $600 doing 22K/day will give you a PPD/$ of 36.6PPD/$, meaning more than DOUBLE the efficiency.

Moral Of the Story: Stick with 1P systems.

$2k for 8-16Gb of RAM, an HDD and a power supply? Try more like $300-500

But yes, 4P and 8P systems aren't exactly value-for-money, but seeing a single rig running 64 WUs at once? That's pure e-penis right there

You're aiming too low with those prices...
    2.5K$ - 3.9K$ per cpu.
    1K$-1.5K$ for mobo
Mems, hdd, psu, gpu ~500-600$ since Nehalem EX uses reg ddr3 and buffering chips are on motherboard/memory modules.

    I second that .
My X5560 consumes 300-310w running WCG
Xeon E5450 is around 250w (-> even less with a pci videocard)

To arrive at a complete picture, as i demonstrated with a Excel sheet before, you have to factor in resale price of the equipment, to account for the capital cost of the rig included, for the time used.
