Post Need a good 120mm fan (3) for rad without deafening me - and cheap!

    Hey all,

My YateLoons are dead - 2/3 of them barely spin and the one that does doesn't seem to spin full speed. Eek! But anyway, I am redoing my water setup so I need some new fans. I don't mind getting YL's again, they worked good for a while. Can anyone recommend a good solution or recommend where to buy YLs from on the cheap?

$5.95 at Petra's Tech Shop, or $19.96 for 4. Gentle Typhoon is also supposed to be a very good fan, but they're more expensive.

Thats where I got my original YLs, but they say out of stock. Is petras still a main player? A lot of their items are "out of stock"

Petras being OOS is almost a running joke now. The problem is, they get their Yates direct from the source, and "Petra's Yates" are generally superior to those carried by other stores.

TBH, if you don't mind spending a little more, I'd very much recommend going with the Gentle Typhoons - great fans for silent operation, but still push a good amount of air. Sticking with Scythe, the Ultra Kaze's are good too for radiators - great static pressure - but not as quiet when undervolted.

FWIW Petra's should have stock in about a week. At least thats what they told me when I tried to order some YL fans last Friday.

What do you guys think of the Kama Sychthe fans?
They are fairly inexpensive, use fluid dynamic bearings, and have very low noise (according to martin's testing)

Your yates died? What's wrong with them? How long did they last?

How did you have your yates mounted?

If they were horizontal, that was because of the bearing type. Sleeve bearings don't last too well when mounted horizontally (ask me how I know, been there, done that). I switched to Sflex fans because of the horizontal mounting.

They lasted prob a little over a year. I had 3 "highs" on my Swiftech radiator which lays horizontal on top of my case and 2 of the 3 YL highs just wiggle back and forth when they get power. Turning them by hand they are more stiff than they should be.

^^^ Yep, horizontal. Lames! I guess its the sleeve bearing. I could probably run them again vertical this time but PTS is out of stock so I said eff it. The Sythe units look to be quiet and good flowing.

so im guessing i should be looking for fans too then... im running Three YL Mediums from PTS on the top of my case, flat...

whats the difference in flow between the YL and the GT

*edit* did some quick math and it looks like the 1450rpm GT only flows abotu 50cfm compared to the 77ish that the YL Medium does at 1600rpm...

here's a good review of a lot of fans. Unfortunately they don't have yates listed. But the actual measured CFM's and the rated CFM seem to differ a lot. Probably has to do with the enclosure he uses to measure them, and some fans better suited for pressure.

Gentle Typhoons cost 200% more than yates yet will last at least 500% longer, especially if horizontal mounted.

Also, have one of the best radiatior noise/airflow ratios of any fan known atm.

Simple choice IMO. I love mine.

I just wish they used black plastic for the fan blades instead of the grey.

I just ordered 6 x 1850 rpm version for my pc, and already replaced the fan in my ReadyNAS with a GT 92mm

Yea, I ordered 1, now I have 5 1850s in my main rig and 2 1450s in my crunching box.

Now if only there were 80mm. I been getting the NBs for my 80 mm fans.

There is also nothing holding me back from painting them ...... o wait .... there is ...... I'm lazy

Personally I adore my S-Flex F's. Perfect level of air movement and noise if you ask me. I don't even bother with a fan controller.

I don't understand how you could be saying that. My Sunbeam controller popped a cap and blew the magic smoke yesterday, so everything's running on full speed at the moment, and my F's are seriously loud. Even my Noctua NF-S12 intake and exhaust fans are irritatingly loud on full speed. Extremely annoying, I'm trying to hold off getting another controller until my tax return comes through, but as I'm now avoiding my machine room and can hear my PC from halfway down the corridor, I may crack and overburden the poor pieces of plastic in my wallet again.
