Intel Updates Mainstream, Performance, and Extreme CPU Roadmap

Intel issued a confidential roadmap for CPU product releases that looks as far as Q3 2010, leaked to sections of the Chinese media. The roadmap covers prominent Intel processors in their designated market segments drawn out by Intel, covering three grades of mainstream, one each of performance and extreme. The roadmap marks a definite transition of architectures from Intel's Core (penryn) to next-generation Nehalem, and the advent of Intel's first 32 nm based Westmere CPUs.

To begin with, there three models of Intel's first LGA-1156 processors scheduled for Q3 2009, the quad-core "Lynnfield" based Core i7 870 (2.93 GHz, HTT) in Performance, Core i7 860 (2.80 GHz, HTT) in MS3/upper-mainstream, and Core i5 750 (2.66 GHz, no HTT) in MS2/middle-mainstream. The HTT-enabled Core i7 800 processors were earlier believed to have been scheduled for Q1 2010, but are combined with the Core i5 750 for a grand platform launch. The Core i7 800 models will remain seated in their segments for the better part of 2010.

Next up, are Intel's "Clarkdale" dual-core processors scheduled for early Q1 2010. These are Intel's first 32 nm technology-based processors, and mark the introduction of Intel's Westmere architecture. Three models, clocked at 3.20 GHz, 3.33 GHz, and 3.46 GHz, will be placed in MS1, MS2, and MS3 segments respectively.

    The Core i7 960 (3.20 GHz, non-XE) succeeds the i7 950 model in Q4 2009, in the Performance segment.

Finally, there's the king of the hill, the 6-core Gulftown processor. Until now believed to have been slated for Q1 2010, it is pushed back to Q2, where it will succeed the Core i7 975 Extreme Edition. So the i7 975 XE will rule the roost for at least another 7 months.

Clarkdale are going to break every 2d (SPi/Pifast) record out there so no need for E8700
I just hope they won't be limited by a bClk/FSB Wall so they can go sky high with speed.

Hm, they don't like 9650s? Must be expensive to make.

Nah, probably just competing with i7. Besides, they have to switch away from s775 at some point anyway.

If that roadmap is accurate, it gives AMD opportunity to close some gaps.

Mind you, if AMD's most recent roadmap is accurate, things won't change that much.

Yeah, can't see it on the current "updated" roadmap. All I'm seeing is that it'll exist alongside i7 860 till Q3 010.

It cost the same amount of money to make a 9650 as it does to make a 9400.

It's just marketing. They'd rather not push old stuff that eats into the segment now occupied by the Core i7 950 and in a few months the 960.

Duno what gabs you mean, amd is still locked out of the performance segment, and with the 860 they even have a hard time in MS3.

Based on that Intel roadmap, AMD will have 12 months where Intel don't release any faster chips.

You think it will be different on AMDs side? Bulldozer is still a year away, we might see one or two speed bumps of the current architecture, but that is just enough to keep the 860 in place.

saaya - YES, Clarkdale (Dual Core with HT) is on the way ... and by my sample is that CPU pure OC and Perf massacre

Chad Boga - hehe, AMD will release for next two years Phenom II X4 956 nothing more, CPU with two years old architecture ... when Intel launch 32nm CPU in High-End and new architecture next year, AMD will have still only Phenoms II ... bacause (it is sad, but true) they have no money for developing and engineering something new ...

EOL dont means you can't buy it any more, its just means intel don't takes any new orders of it anymore. Old orders befor EOL date still will be served and it takes quite some time till all the inventory in the channle is celared.

Yeah, I also feel spoiled. Seems like I have to keep my Q6600 for at least another year.

No 32nm quad = fail. Well, maybe Sandy Bridge, or AMD...

What's funny is that if they do keep the i7 920 around, how do they expect to sell any of the i5/i7 7/8XX CPUs? The i7 920 is only $200 at MicroCenter and the X58 boards have fallen nicely in price. And even if you don't have a MC near you, you can still get the i7 920 for about $250-$280 at just about any online shop.

Why would anyone go with a lesser product for more money? The 2.66Ghz i5 750 is going to cost about $200 when released, have no HT and support for only dual channel memory. The 2.8Ghz i7 860 is going to cost about $285 at launch it does support HT but only dual channel memory.

Unless the majority of the P55 boards coming out are going to be sub $150 at launch, I just can't see the reasoning behind buying a s1156 setup when you can have s1366 and support for Tri channel memory and the upcoming Gulftown CPUs.....
