    Optical Explosion!

Well, pictures are worth a thousand words so they say....

Here's what just happened to my DVD drive (Lite-on DVD RW Lightscribe)

(Pics were taken on a Canon EOS 300D (18-55mm) by a total photo noob so bear with them.)

Took the casing off to see the damage...

As you can see, the disk clearly decided to re-distribute itself over the rest of the drive. Why? How? -I have no idea, I only noticed once the sound of a Disk shredding itself apart reached my ears.

    Heres some close ups!

And if you havent guessed what it is yet, i'll be very disapointed.

As for the drive, it *looks* fine, but probably isnt.

Any suggestion as to how this might have happened?
Maybe Kane just couldn't restrain his wrath and annihilated my drive.... i knew I should have got the bog-standard version.... DAMN YOU KANEEEEEEEEEEE!

this happens all the time somewhere on the planet ^^

these very thin pc disks rotate with an insane velocity creating very high forces which can result in...well...breaking stuff

Your drive went rouge and spun it a little too fast? The disk might of been faulty and finally gave in.

Aye, this is more frequent a problem than most realize. Granted not a huge one though.

Most of the time it is a crack in the disc that causes it. A slight cracking in the disc and the speeds rom drives can get up to... pop goes a disc!

Ive had this happen to me and thats what it was. A small Hairline crack is all it takes when the drive spins as fast as they can.

It happened to me once with a heavily used windows disk and it took out the opticle drive. The windows disk had a slight fracture but it was still usable. Maybe your disk had a fracture that you had not noticed or was not visible?

As for the drive... Questionable. If totally cleaned out yes it should work fine. But the shards might of left dust on the lens that might of scrached it, stuff on the circuit boards or in the drive gears. Doubt it would harm a new disk put in there but you might have issues right away or down the road of reading items on the drive.

Blow it out with compressed air (while you still have all the covers off) and it should be fine.

I guess your need for speed was to much this time!
You overclocked your optical drive to high!
