SWEET JESUS CHRIST thats fast, do you get that speed all the time? in london the fastest we get residential right now is an unmetered 50mbit/1.5mbit which is £35 a month, the same ISP is testing out 100mbit/5mbit coming out Q4 for £50 a month! cant wait. think about what speeds we'll have at these prices in 10 years.. only been just over a decade since I was using a 28kbps modem really..!

I hate all you people. I am stuck with TWC in So Cal where TWC's nodes are oversold and I only have a 1.5/384 line. I guess its ok. I don't D/L alot, but would be nice to have at least a 6/1 connection.

Yeah I'm using the Telus equivilent of that Dragoon. I used to be on their 3/.640 so its a big upgrade for me. I'm guessing your somewhere between Calgary and Edmonton ? I've been told our lines here have the capacity of about 50mbit or so from a Telus tech but they don't intend to impliment it for a while yet ( I'm guessing a 2+ years )

You guys are lucky. Here in Australia we're still stuck with piss poor cable speeds. And I'm stuck with a 9MB connection and its not good enough.

Cable has never, ever delivered the full bandwidth it has been rated for. Admittedly it has gone up over the years, but at each "this is your max" it has always fallen short of the mark by easily 50% in many cases. And since we have a lot of remote users at work, I know my story is far from unique in the Boston suburbs. So my pay for 100, get 5 comment might be exaggerated, but it's a fact you don't get more than a fraction of the promised speed from cable.

I'm in a Socal TWC area, and it also sucks here. I can get somewhat decent download speeds, but it's really bad for gaming (ping is extremely variable). I'm using DSL with much lower bandwidth for the price, but the ping is very stable.

Here is what I get with Charter Cable in Alabama for about $90 at the moment.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

Im in the Socal TWC area and my speeds are ridiculously fast...

Im getting what i paid for and then some...

At times i get 3.0 Megabytes per second download speeds. Usually its 1.7-2.0 megabytes per second.

No, of course not Please understand that there is no way such cheap home connection will do half megabit speed over the Atlantic 4000 miles away, maybe in 10 years

But as I said before I can't complain about my connection

See you gotta love OOL in general though, there latency on there network is so low.

This is with OOL boost. its advertise 30/5, actually getting 55.2/5.2 , wont believe the price either, since we have a 20 year old account or something, when added internet package, they offered us to OOL and Teleaphone for 10 bucks a month each. 10 bucks extra if we wanted boost. so 20 dollars a month for this connection, you really cant beat it.... and no its not 20 dollars for the first 6 months or whatever. it was actually free for the first 6 months, 20 dollars after that.

After 20 years of having negative signal they finally changed cable outside to the biggest wire they had. its like a 1-1.5 inch cable, so we have +22 singal (too much) but its been adjusted.

    Heheh.

Dom, what router do you plan on using ?
