I don't get all the bashing, it's not a bad achievement in this business to get probably like 70~80% perf boost (what I'm expecting with the rumored or not so much rumored-anymore specs) and nearly or roughly the same power consumption as previous gen. Just wait until there's some FPS results and I think people will be much more forgiving, GT300 has a serious chance of becoming the new G80 on the paper, I just hope all this stuff ain't just made up regarding the specs. ;p
Intel? Core i5-4670K @ 4.3 GHz | ASRock Extreme6 Z87 | G.Skill Sniper 2x8GB @ DDR4-1866 CL9 | Gigabyte GTX 970 OC Windforce 3x | Super Flower Titanium 1000W | ViewSonic VX2268wm 120Hz LCD | Phanteks PH-TC14PE | Logitech MX-518 | Win 7 x64 Professional | Samsung 850 EVO & 840 Pro SSDs
If all people would share opinions in an objective manner, the world would be a friendlier place
its the new g80 in specs
but the gtx 280 was also the next g80 in specs...
i don't give a crap about how it looks on paper... i want it to actually BE the new g80
5870 X2 MIGHT be the next g80 in terms of performance... but.... there doesn't appear to be anything truly revolutionary in it (leaving dx11 aside) so i have really high hopes for nvidia
i also hope they fix the massive FPS hit when enabling AA/AF
on my 4870 at 1920x1200 i had lower overall framerates when everything was maxed w/o AA/AF compared to my gtx285 which replaced it (got it cheap) but when you compared the overall framerates with AA/AF the 4870 felt MUCH smoother because well... it had more frames because the performance hit was much less
i also think 4000's series image quality is better than the 200 series... maybe its just me but i like the way games and what not look more on the 4870 (maybe its just differing color settings in control panel between nvidia control panel and CCC)
Yup, I'm using my 8800gt while I'm waiting for my 4870x2 to get replaced ( its taking like 2+ months... ) and even at 30% fan speed, which is idle, its the loudest thing in my system. I had used a GTX 260 216 (65nm) for about a month and it was the first dual slot card I've been all around impressed with as far as thermals and noise levels go. Even with the default fan profile, I barely could hear a increase in noise when the card was under load. I haven't used a 285 in my system firsthand so I can't comment on its noise level but again noise tolerance is a subjective thing.
If we consider this 225W TDP rumor ( realistic I'd say ) it would make sense to assume that their new high end single gpu card should use a cooling solution similar to the current 285. However the use of GDDR5 may cause for a stronger heatsink and or high rpm fan usage so it's tough to say.
As far as the whole G80 thing, I would be ecstatic to see a new card like the 8800GTX again. I've used nearly every highend ATI / Nvidia card since the 9800pro ( 9700 was before my time xD) and I must say to this day nothing brought a smile to my face like the 8800GTX did and that was coming from a x1900xt. It was the first card I've ever had straight from launch. Sadly it died on me after a year but lucky enough I got 2 8800GTS 512s as a warrenty replacement so all was well
As for the squealing cards, I know what you mean! I HATE that so much. My X2 would do it in GRID really really badly. It's almost like nails on a chalk board to me.

Good news, I hope all this stuff is true.
Impressive, but looks too good to be true from what we know so far about GT300...
