    nVidia GT300 targets 225W TDP

    http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news...-225w-tdp.aspx

Unlike AMD/ATI, nVidia spent Computex Taipei 2009 in silence, not mentioning anything about the future of their hardware. That was to be expected, given the fact that nVidia was also silent during Computex Taipei 2008, and then briefing select journalists about Tesla D1060 and S1070 week after the show in Santa Clara, CA. Of course, this was followed by launching GeForce GTX280 and GTX260 the week after.

Thus, nVidia is keeping silent about their DirectX 11 plans, but don't think that the timing of their "nVision Lite" [End of September 2009] is timed just because they want to talk about 15 month GT200 architecture. Our sources are confident that the part is on track, and that it will launch during Q3 2009. Again, according to the same sources, one of primary concerns was how to avoid all the thermal spots that plagued the GT200 architecture.

The GT300 part targets a thermal range of 225W and should feature two 6-pin PEG [PCI Express Graphics] power connectors, same as on the current GTX285 graphics card. The target was not previously rumored 300W, e.g. one 8-pin and one 6-pin PCIe. Then again, nVidia should hold off from opening the champagne, since ATI's Evergreen uses just one 6-pin PEG. Dual Evergreen will probably use the conventional high-end arrangement off one 8-pin and one 6-pin PEG connector.

There you go. You have a 40nm chip targeting clocks of 700 MHz for the core, 1600 MHz for those 512 MIMD shader cores and nice 1.1 GHz QDR, e.g. 4.4 GT/s for the GDDR5 memory... sucking same amount of power as the actual GTX285. Expect Jen-Hsun and Ujesh to be all over the power features inside the chip, since the chip architects sweted blood over this one.
    -by Theo Valich!

I dont know if it originally came from http://www.hardware-infos.com/news.p...2997&sprache=1

That, I would buy! A GTX 385 is probably going to look so much more attractive than the 285 which is rather unimpressive when compared to the smaller, less power-hungry 4890.

wow, that's much better that i had expected. but it seems that i'm hearing much later launch dates everywhere else, usually late q1 '10. but then these are all rumors...

when i first saw gtx280 reviews my jaw dropped, as my 9800gx2 was just as good in sli supported games. instead of buying anything from this gen, i just bought another gx2

    My feelings exactly.

I think my 8800 GTS 640mb set my expectations too high. Even going from that to a GTX 260 (216) I was totally unimpressed.

At this point, I don't care if GT300 costs $800 for the high end, I'm buying it. (assuming it's you know, really really fast ).

Well I'd like to be excited but I got all excited over G200 which we all thought was going to be a HUGE leap forward and instead was just a couple of steps forward.

I'll take a 20% performance hit for a significant drop in power savings :/. 225w for a video card is a little furnace.

GTX 280 was gigantic over 8800GTX... especially with AA/AF it could be 2-2.5x faster at high res.

I am ecstatic if it is true this is coming in Q3 2009 instead of Q1 2010!

    Q3 ?

is this a response to amd saying they will be "first" with a dx11 card?

Is this to be believed and can nVidia do it. Two important questions.

Well maybe nvidia can do it... but can they do it right?

I'd love it if this made it by late Q3, or early Q4, but just don't think it's really going to happen. AMD is going to have a working set of cards, and months to hawk them, before Nvidia will even have samples...

    yeah

8800 series set my expectations too high... still waiting for the next g80

that said... my 4870 died and i replaced it on the downlow with a gtx285... hopefully i can make a huge step up with this or the 5870x2... but i'm not expecting an epic g80 out of the 5000 series

These are Theo Valich's rumors that are saying that the GTX 300 will be here anytime sooner than 2010.

AMD, on the other hand, has made its intentions clear in an official statement:

    Wtf?!?

I really don't like what is happening on XS... get over to silentpcreview if that is really how you feel... this with all the support of these slower, but "green" hard drives...

everyone is entitled to thier opinion. xs has a huge variety of members with everything from best buy specials to phase change monsters. sure we focus on the "xtreme" stuff, but if you look through all the build logs there are rigs with many many different purposes.

but in response to what cirthix is saying: you can't have your cake and eat it too. the worlds fastest gpu isn't going to consume 5 watts. even at 40nm it's going to take some juice to feed those shaders.

Meh, all kinds of faces to 'xtreme'. And quieting a high-powered rig below ambient sound can definitely fall into that category. Sometimes I think too many people confuse "Xtreme" with "Throwing money at problem". I mean, we're hardware enthusiasts, not politicians.

thanks 570091D and 003, i don't disagree with you but i thought it's more about taking the normal, standard, stock stuff and going extreme with it, not going extreme out the box. making something out of nothing, taking a piece of hardware that others would write off and make it outperform the top of the line.
well, anyway, thats my defenition of XS

I agree, this forum is mainly about getting every last hertz of power. If you want to go save power buy a netbook and join Greenpeace.

I'll stick with my xtreme hardware and what have you.

I accept that most of us have a balance between power and acceptable levels of power/heat/noise etc. It's common sense but I don't want the latest and greatest to be lame when it come out because of 'being green'. That's what your intel atom is for. (might i point out that i use an nc10 for casual internet and only my laptop/desktop when necessary so I can be 'green' )

I'd personally rather see a huge TDP drop...mid to higher end cards using one 6 pin instead of 2

    Underclock/Undervolt that bad boy.

I completely feel you though I took my CPU up from 2.33 to 2.9 at the same time undervolted to 1.1.

Wow, just wow... People are actually complaining that TDP values are too low?

Since WHEN does TDP say a about performance?

I am not going to compare cards, but according to reviews HD4770 is at about 60W in fulload, now compare that to a card with similar performance such as HD4850 - HD4770 got lighter specs but higher clocks.

There can be optimization to the shader units, and the whole GPU since you know - GT300 is actually new.

I am one who thinks the PC industry needs to work hard on getting energyconsumption down. I won't call anyone out here but the idiocy is just amazing sometimes.
