AMD Plans Price Cut For HD 4800 Series In Q3

Starting from next month, AMD will cut the prices of their Radeon HD 4890, 4870, 4850 up to as much as US$50. This move is probably to lower the current inventory of their high end GPUs to make way for the RV870 series in September.

Price of HD 4890 card will be lowered from US$249 to US$199 while HD 4870 will be priced at US$149, down from US$199. Lastly, HD 4850 which we already saw the prices plummeting due to HD 4770 shortages will go below US$100 this time.

Woohoo, cheaper HD 4890s! But shouldn't RV870 be out in late Q3 or am I mistaken on the date?

if rumors are true and nvidia can't deliver gt300 until late q1 of next year, this could REALLY harm thier aib business. in order to compete they'll have to sell gt200 cards at a loss, they'll be kept afloat by tegra/ion but things aren't looking good for the green goblin.

    Yes. 5870 is in October.

    $199 4890s = FTW

That means 4890 Xfire for $399, which is insane.

the really scary part is how much the RV870 will cost. if they are planning a 300$ part sometime this year, its gonna be worlds above the 4890, or just charge a huge markup for its dx11 logo.

If they can get a die shrink on gt200 there might be some salvation, but they've really stumbled as of late.

Somewhere between the GTX285 and the 4870X2 is what I'm guessing.

    Again, I'm telling people to think 3870 -> 4870.

Official price of $199 will mean we'll see reference 4890s for $180ish without MIRs

im doubting that if the chip size of this is going to be ~180mm2. it will probably be 20-30% stronger than a 4890 depending on the clocking room of 40nm, which i think we will see 1000-1100mhz stock speeds and OC up to 1200mhz

i hope this new one goes for 250$ and we see its big brother, the 300$ version, out around holiday times

Perhaps I should have typed out my entire thought process.. doesn't make much sense to keep selling the HD4890 unless the HD5870 isn't going to be as big of a launch as compared to the HD4870 launch. I don't recall well, but I'm pretty certain the HD3870 fell off the face of the earth when the HD4870 launched rather than getting a price cut and hanging around at the HD4850 price level.

A 4870 for $149 is just killer... i mean, a few years ago $149 would get you a craptacular card

now we just need to see an influx of non-reference cooling solutions... 1000mhz sapphire on reference is almost 2900xt hot! :P

In all fairness, the 3870 wasn't as popular as the 4870. It was simply overall an improvement (power consumption, heat, etc) over then the 2900XT. So IMO, if we are to believe that the 4870 is selling better it would make sense to discontinue it through price reduction (just a theory). Instead of paper cutting what they did with the 3870. Not only will it allow them to "black ink" those waffers but to saturate the market with both 4800 series and 5800 series video cards.

In summary, it looks to me that AMD it's attempting to increase market share by any means necessary. From the looks of it appears they can afford to do so based on high yields, lowered manufacturing costs, etc.

Thats actually what I was thinking. They may have already stopped producing and just shipping out whats available??

Or they found a really cheap way of making these cards.

Or the next gen is going to blow away everything 9700pro style so hard they won't be able to make mainstream cards.

It's really hard to say. It seems to me that they are looking to penetrate the market through lower pricing strategy.

but i'm really not expecting a 9700pro style release for the 5800 cards. as mentioned before, the die at 40nm suggests 1200 shaders which would probably result in a 15-20% performance increase. but then they might have made some more march changes and increased the gddr speeds, we'll find out in a few months.

I think the 3870's suffered like they did because the hype over the HD4000 series was so great.
