1000 series is socket AM2 so single socket only.
2000 series is socket 1207 F dual socket.
8000 series is socket 1207 F dual or quad socket.

The higher last 2 numbers the newer the chip.

Some handy links. AMD CPU World
You can look up individual CPUs for details. If you try to look up a CPU and it is not listed it is probably an embedded processor. Best to post details in AMDs Opteron forums for info. They show up on Ebay now and then.

There a several HP Workstation/Server MBs on Ebay I have been watching. They are made by Tyan, most are new and are dual socket 1207 F. Prices run from $109-$179. I do not know much about Asus MBs except for the thread here that everyone had problems with an Asus Intel MB. Tyan I know and that is where my comfort level is. I have read the cheaper Tyan 2912 series has less voltage reg. I think so might want to avoid those.

The board looks good to me. As far as sellers I went thru all them listed and all from China. I dunno. Does not have a perfect record but reading the comments looks like language differences may be biggest problem. I do wonder why all in China. Maybe the OEM is selling off excess stock. Or maybe stolen. Who knows. I like the board though. Does say 5 phase for each socket so that is good.

That board supports Barcelona cpus, so 65nm Quads work. So with bios update you should get nice board. If i'm looking at same auction it's around 90$?

    I'd go pair of 8347HEs (1.9GHz) 109$ per pair or 8356s (2.3GHz) 89$ per cpu.

I've certainly not seen 8356's for anything like that price over here.....It seems that such don't make it to ebay(uk) until they are 2 generations old

Thanks for that...they show up here too

How much memory per cpu should be considered a minimum and which OS? would I get away with using XP?

2GB/per socket should be enought, yes you can use XP with DP setting but QD is no go since max cpu sockets XP supports is 2.

While we are talking dual processors......how important is it to get a PAIR? or put another way what would be the effect of buying singles for a DP build?

While I can't answer anything about performance, I can say that if you are just asking if you CAN run a single CPU in a dual board, I have also asked that in the past and was always told yes.

Well I've had two different E5420's (different batch , both were stepping 'C0').

Worked fine , no problem at all. I would stay with the same stepping/revision ,though.

You an run 1 CPU on a dual board. Advantage of buying a pair is usually matching stepping. It is usually important to get matching stepping. Sometimes, always on some boards, if stepping does not match they won't run stable.

So at the moment you can spend $55 for a mobo and $79 for an opty, or $89 for a Phenom 9600BE and a similar priced mobo. For ~$135 you can get a quad crunching machine. I am curious, with an average OC of say 2.5Ghz on the opty and I suspect a bit better from the 9600BE on a board with ACC, how many of these would it take to beat an i7 rig? I realize power consumption is also going to be higher, but if it took say two of these rigs to match an i7 rig, you would be spending alot less and the saving between two of these and an i7 rig would more than pay for the cost in electricity (speaking as a person who pays ~$0.07 kh/w). Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Well, an i7 at 3.8-4.0 GHz puts out about the same points as two Q6600's at 3.6 Ghz, and most AMD quads put out about the same points as a similarly clocked Q6600. At 2.5 Ghz, you're averaging about 10k WCG PPD? As opposed to 30k-ish for an i7. So at a guess you'd need around about 3 Opties (honestly I wouldn't bother with the 9600BE, too much heat and power consumption for its clock speeds, IMO) at 2.5 Ghz to match a 3.8-ish i7. Alternatively, you can just about match that with two Phenom II's clocked at 3.6, which from what I've heard is fairly attainable with PII 940BE's.

    Eller

    Desktop: Q6600 G0 @ 3.6 Ghz | P5E | 2x2 Gb G.Skill PC8000 | GTX 560 Ti | CM690 | TT TP 750 watt | Win 7 Pro x64 | Water Cooling
    Server: i3 530 (Stock) | CM Vortex Low-Profile | Zotac H55-ITX WIFI | 2x2Gb Corsair 1333Mhz | IGP | VX450 | Server 2008 R2 x64

I'll have to dig through this thread to see what power consumption was on a opty at 2.5Ghz. I have a 9600BE right now crunching and I've not gotten to the tweaking for minimum voltage but at full load the whole system draws about 140W at the wall according to kill-a-watt. To horrible I suppose, but that is for only 2.3Ghz. I know to hit 2.5Ghz I think I can keep it at stock voltage but to go beyond that the voltage goes up very fast. I've yet to try it with ACC on though, and the board it is sitting in has ACC. May be able to set ACC to -%'s and run the same speed at lower voltage at least. I just like the idea of an unlocked quad for $89.

    ECS GF8200a $79
    GA-MA69VM-S2
    GA-MA69GM-S2H
    GA-MA74GM-S2 $49
    GA MA78GM-S2H
    GA-MA78GPM-DS2H
    Foxconn 780V $59
    MSI K9N2SLIPlatinum
    MSI DKA-790GX

These are only ones I know that will recognize AM2 Opterons. Seems MSI and Gigabyte are pretty safe.
