    TRUE owners please report

I've got 2 questions: I picked up a TRUE Black yesterday, together with a Scythe Slipstream 120 (the 1900RPM model). I tested the setup today and I came to notice that a lot of air is escaping through the sides of the heatsink because of the heatpipes. Would it be worth it to add another fan in push-pull config?

Next up would be lapping. I've still got some 1000grit paper here, but I have no idea whether it'd be worth the effort.

I'm not looking at performance here, but I'd much rather have two low-RPM fans in push-pull rather than 1 high-RPM fan if it were to make a difference.

I've had a TRUE120 on my q6600 since oct 2007.. tried push-pull for a while, but tbh it was great at first and a feel good factor of knowing it was there. but the dust collection cleanup and dealing with 2 fans soon outweighed the feel good factor. then I tried both for a while, and finally settled on push.. attached with a micro bungee cord around the whole thing, and about every 2 months I pop the bungee and remove the dust with a toothbrush. then blow it out.

    that's just my .02
    I'm sure there's probably a 100 ways.. it's pretty versatile.

lapping the true is a must. every one of them has very bad finish of base
go with 600grit u will faster remove metal then 800 1000 and 2000 for bling

push-pull combination is better than one fan setup, but it's also louder
u can also search in air cooling section for washer mod (event better performance with this mod)

I'd say pushing is enough.... although I'm using an Ultra Kaze 3000. Well my case's rear exhaust fan is an Ultra Kaze 3000 also and it's only a few inches away... so I guess it sorta pulls. My true is lapped but not washer modded.

How thick a washer is used for the washer mod?

Some one on these forums made a shroud to keep the air from escaping out the top and bottom of the heat sink.

    I'm sorry, I don't really know.

At one time I had a cardboard shroud on my true going from the front edge to the rear case fan. It really didn't help much in my situation.

Here's a pic a took a long time ago when I lapped one of my true's. Shows the size of the washer I used. I just glued it on the bracket.

As for what fan works best, A med speed panaflo 38mm is what I use the most. An old school fan, but I have found it to work great. I also use 2 med yate loon's in push pull. About the same temps and maybe a little quieter.

    i have had 2 version of TRUE120
first i got smth. autumn '07 and it required something to put between the [ X ] bracket to fix it properly on both asus boards
    ! i was using TRUE120 original backplate ! (asus maximus extreme , asus P5K3-delux w.ap boards.
    for fix - i used 1.5 mm steel washer ( i think even 1mm -> 1.2mm will be enough )
    http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/6...true120cx5.jpg

second 'TRUE' i got TRUE120 Black Edition ('09) and currently stands on Rampage Extreme
! here i cannot use original backplate bcoz of the VR chip on RE back side proce area !
then used xigmatek universal (only)backplate and .. BTW i do NOT NEED any additional washer modding,
it is properly fixed with orig. mounting clip and custom backplate

i did not had chance to compare both versions (mounting clips) of TRUE's side by side, as i sold first before got other.
So can't tell - is the mounting re-designed by TR .. since '07 version to later releases ?
any way by visuals in my memory they look very similar

Just my opinion - not 100% sure, could be that that other (custom) backplate makes sense ?

Thanks everyone, I'll guess I lap this thing in the weekend. The two top fans of my TJ07 will work fine pulling the hot air out of the case I think, so I guess I'll just see how it does first.

Hey Martijn, you should try it without lapping it first. I have 4 of these and have lapped 3 of them. The last one I got I decided to not lap or use the washer mod, and I get just as good as results with it. Seems that the later ones are better than the first ones. Plus, if you do decide to lap it, you will have something to compare to.

None of mine would make decent contact without lapping. Instead of the washer trick I simply tweak the hold down bracket a bit to create more pressure, works fine for me.

edit: A lapping guide I did awhile back
